A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

NSFW In Zipolite soon

In Zipolite soon

What would you like to know?

Taxi from HUX is easy. There is a taxi kiosk just outside of the arrivals doors. They will get you a taxi to Zipo. It is fixed rate. You can walk to the highway if you want it a bit cheaper but I'd recommend the standard taxi your first time. It is a hot walk.

You have probably read that it has a nude beach so you can be nude on the beach but not in town. Some, but not all, hotels and restaurants along the beach allow you to be nude. Generally the rule-of-thumb is that you can be nude on beach chairs and lounges at restaurants on the beach but they would prefer you to be covered while sitting at a restaurant off-beach. Hotels like Nude, Naked that are clothing optional you can wander around nude. Standard nudist edicate - sit on something while nude, don't take photos of someone without permission, etc.

It is warm all year round. So I usually just pack shorts, t-shirts and a couple of nice short sleeve dress shirts for going to dinner. Sandals & runners.

I stay off beach so I wear a mini-sarong for going to / from the beach and walking around town during the day. It looks like a skirt and is easy on / off. I have a sling man-bag for carrying my stuff while nude.

Bring pesos. While it is getting better, many places don't take credit cards. Certainly not USD. There is an ATM there but it frequently runs out of cash or the network goes down.

Most restaurants and restaurants have wi-fi so you can get internet connection. I did that for years. Super cheap SIMS cards are available too.

DM me if you have any other questions.

Have fun.
