A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Located on the Pacific coast of Mexico, Playa Zipolite is a popular yoga and wellness hub. The beach is surrounded by craggy cliffsides juxtaposed with lush green hills, offering numerous vantage points for the perfect sunset. As one of Mexico’s only nudist beaches, holiday-makers can opt to go without clothing as they sunbathe, swim and relax on the golden sands of this popular beach.

To reach the laid-back sands of Playa Zipolite, there are two main means of transport: an airport taxi, or a combination of local buses. The easiest option, especially if you have luggage, is an airport taxi since you’ll be dropped straight to your hotel or apartment in around 80 minutes. The bus, on the other hand, will require an initial shared colectivo bus or taxi into the city centre to connect with a bus to Pochutla, before connecting with another colectivo to Zipolite. While it is the cheapest option, it’s very complicated and has a travel time of at least 120 minutes.

Where do Puerto Escondido Airport taxis depart from?

You’ll be assigned a driver when you pay for your ride at the ticket booth inside the airport terminal. Your driver will then meet you directly in front of the airport terminal.

Convenience

While an airport taxi is by far the quickest and most convenient transport option, sometimes there is a wait for official taxis, especially during peak travel periods. If you want to skip the queue – and the heat – you can pre-book your airport taxi and have a driver waiting for you when you land. You’ll have a fluent English-speaking driver and enjoy a range of complimentary travel perks.

EDITOR’S NOTE

If your flight arrives in the evening or night, your only option may be to take an airport taxi since buses and colectivos are not reliable after 19:00.

USEFUL TIPS

On the main road outside the airport, you will spot green and white local taxis. These provide lower fares but are less regulated, and you will have to negotiate the fare upfront in Spanish.

Have the directions to your hotel written down in Spanish to assist your driver with any language barriers.

Unless your driver helps you with your luggage, it is not necessary to tip your driver in Mexico.

How to get from Puerto Escondido Airport to Playa Zipolite - Welcome Pickups

Welcome Pickups

To reach the laid-back sands of Playa Zipolite, there are two main means of transport: an airport taxi, or a combination of local buses. The easiest ...While taking the bus from the airport to your destination in Playa Zipolite is by far the most budget-friendly choice, it isn’t the most convenient. The trip requires several transfers which is a hassle if you’re travelling with luggage, plus you may have to wait hours in between bus services which means the journey can take more than twice as long as a taxi.

If you’re not under any time constraints this option may be perfectly suitable, however, if you’d rather travel directly to your accommodation without the hassle of navigating the complicated transport system, a pre-booked airport taxi is a much more convenient and straightforward option. A pre-booked airport taxi is also air-conditioned!
