A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

Zipolite. — The nudist paradise of the Oaxacan coast is also a space where it is taught that inclusion is born from the community, and to this the Piña Palmera civil association has been dedicated for more than 30 years, which grants training and rehabilitation for more than 530 low-income people living with a disability.

The year 2021 will go down in history as the second in a pandemic that does not give the world a break and forced the population to put their faith in a recently created vaccine . In Oaxaca , this left images such as the hours of waiting in which the elderly waited with hope, but it also prompted testimonies of resistance to access the biological. These moments and more were captured by the lens of our photographers and are shown below.

Save the forest and the
Zimatlán heritage.  — Inhabitants of the community of Cumbre Clavellinas organize to fight the fire that, after devouring part of their forest, spread to at least 10 homes of the population belonging to the municipality of Zimatlán, conurbation to the capital. According to official data, Oaxaca registered 148 forest fires in the year.

The path traveled by the saxophonist María Elena Ríos, after surviving an attempted femicide with acid, has made it clear that in Mexico justice for women is treated as if it were a matter that can wait.

Where the Covid does not seem to exist
Puerto Escondido.– Since the beginning of the pandemic, this destination has oscillated between closures and red lights and a nightlife that never gave way. At dusk, parties in secret locations and massive attendance dominated the scene, while tourists relaxed the measures as it was an open space.

Disadvantages in the vaccination process against the virus 
The lack of organization in the massive application of the vaccine against Covid-19 caused postcards like this one, in which an elderly woman had to spend the night inside a combi outside one of the 11 vaccination sites in the city of Oaxaca. The wait in some cases was more than 48 hours, time in which everyone waited with faith in the biological disease before a disease that has claimed almost 6 thousand lives in the entity.

Being mothers among the salt
Salina Cruz.— More than 200 women from the community of Salina del Marqués, on the Isthmus, spend their entire lives and raise their children between seawater and the salt they extract with the blow of a shovel . It is an arduous job that occupies them from sunrise to sunset, and that every time demands more effort from the fields that are about to be depleted and each time they harvest less.

Elections in peace in the middle of the
Quialana pandemic. – In contrast to the violence that marked the electoral day in the entity, in the Zapotec community of San Bartolomé Quialana, the process passed in peace, thanks to the fact that the polls are controlled by women who They are dedicated to commerce and the home and are elected for this function, this year in accordance with sanitary measures.

The ritual of the
Ayutla cornfield.– Ayuujk women originating from Ayutla, in the Sierra Norte, are in charge of preserving the ritual of planting the cornfield, which consists of offering an offering to Mother Earth, with the hope to achieve a good harvest.

They win the vaccine in court
It was a long process that included a legal battle between their parents against the federal welfare authorities, who tried to stop them, but finally 18 children managed to access the anti-Covid vaccine and turned Oaxaca into a one of the first entities where the biological was applied, all thanks to the lawyer Alma Franco.

The colors of the flowery fields do not die
Zimatlán. – After more than a year and seven months and a serious impact on their economy, marigold and rooster comb producers regained hope when the pandemic allowed visitors to return to admire the colors from the fields, mainly to take photos, but also to buy flowers.
