PACIFIC HURRICANES | 01 de Junio de 2015
Mexico City, June 1 (EFE).- Hurricane Andres strengthened to category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale and is currently moving away from the Mexican coasts of the Pacific with sustained winds of 205 kph (127.3 mph) with wind gusts reaching a speed of 250 kph (155.3 mph), Mexico's National Meteorological Service, SMN, reported on Sunday.
The hurricane occurred on Sunday afternoon around 920 km (572 miles) to the west-southwest of Socorro island in Colima state and around 1,260 km (783 miles) south-west of San Lucas gulf, Baja California Sur, moving westwards at 13 kph (8 mph).
The hurricane could cause heavy rains in Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan and Nayarit, the latest SMN report said.
Although an alert has not been declared in these states owing to the remoteness of the hurricane, the organization advised people and the maritime navigation in the vicinity to take precautions and follow guidelines issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System.
Experts predict the occurrence of 19 named cyclones in this year's Pacific hurricane season -that began on May 15- which is 40 percent more than the historical average.
These would include four hurricanes of category 3, 4 and 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale and seven of category 1 and 2.
The Atlantic will experience seven cyclones.
The Atlantic hurricane season kicked off almost a month before its official start date of June 1 with Storm Ana on May 8.
