Reconciliation with the Sea Turtle
A reconciliation with the sea turtle is the history of Mazunte, a heavenly destination in Oaxaca’s coast. In the mid 20th century, a large number of sea turtles would arrive here to lay their eggs, but both, their meat and eggs, were a prized food for the surrounding communities. After the complete sea turtle ban of 1990, the building of a live museum in Mazunte was undertaken, where the care of this chelonians is now promoted. Since then, Mazunte began to stand out not only as a site boasting the characteristic beauty of Oaxaca’s beaches, but also as a destination developing with sustainable strategies and care for the natural surroundings.
Mazunte is a clear example demonstrating that it is not necessary to put the natural environment at risk in order to enjoy a great tourist experience. Without the infrastructure of the large hotel chains, Mazunte offers low-cost, rustic alternatives, always making a priority the respect for nature. Furthermore, this town has had the vision to include within their tourist offerings cultural events, such as the Spring Equinox Festival, which includes international dance exhibitions and jazz concerts. Another delight awaiting visitors at Mazunte is the needlefish dish; however, restaurants with regional, Mexican and international dishes can also be found.
Mazunte offers several beaches that visitors can enjoy: Principal Beach, Rinconcito Beach and Bermejita Beach are the closest ones; and further down, visitors will find Aragon Beach, San Agustinillo Beach and Ventanilla Beach. All of them are ideal for water sports or to relax on the sand. One of the sites visitors cannot miss while in Mazunte is Punta Cometa, the highest mountain within the southern Pacific. Many visitors claim it possesses energetic qualities; but what is certain, is that it offers amazingly beautiful sunrises and sunsets, in addition to the migrating marine and bird species arriving here.
