A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Puerto Escondido is Fluid

Puerto Escondido is Fluid

The title here is not referring to all the water to the south of Puerto (PORT), rather it is referring to changes.
Living in Xico we find change is seldom; stores and restaurants are pretty much a constant; not so here in Puerto. Restaurants and shops seem to pop up and disappear or change hands or names often.
This is a heads-up on the restaurant El Jardin. Last February we wrote about it HERE.
We were alarmed upon arrival in October to see El Jardin closed. We knew Franco, the entrepreneur proprietor, had built another establishment just up the main avenue of the Zicatela ‘strip’, but thought it was to be a bit different – more fast food like.
We were pleasantly surprised to find that El Jardin with a name change to “Mana” is essentially the same restaurant, but in a better location – right on the beach with wow! views.. The menu is the same and the terrific desserts and even the La Pavoni espresso machine made the trip across the street.
Mana’s new sign!
So do not despair if you return to town and find El Jardin closed up – It is alive and well right across from Cafecito Restaurant (Zicatela branch – there are two Cafecito locations).
Even El Jardin’s sign made it across the street.
The temperatures have been a consistent 70 F low and 85 F highs (20 to 30 C) for the last two months here – you have to love that!  Stay Tuned!
