A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

November Mexico Updates 🇲🇽 Los Cabos, Bacalar, & Government Policy Changes!

Hola my Mexico-loving friends!

My hair is still stiff with chlorine from my last swim in the pool at Circulo Bacalar as I prepare to board my flight back to Seattle.

I have spent the last 7 days at a Mexico-focused travel conference in a town that I haven't visited since 2019. I started and finished my trip in the beautiful Pueblo Magico of Bacalar.

If you haven't heard of Bacalar, it's an inland town about two hours south of Tulum. It doesn't have a beach, but it does have one of the most vibrantly blue lagoons that I have ever seen.

More incredibly, the town hasn't lost any of the charm that it had when I visited it nearly six years ago (thankfully both my videos and my hairstyle have improved since I made this one). In a state like Quintana Roo where Tulum, Akumal, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morelos have expanded enormously in the last decade, it's nice to know that there is still treasure to be found if you head away from the Caribbean Coast.

I'm working on some articles about this magical place that I will send out in a new "Mexico Spotlight" newsletter on the 15th of the month.

Mexico Content from Eternal Expat

Between my trip to Mexico and the work that I am doing to update the Los Cabos guidebook, there wasn't much content over on Eternal Expat this month. However, there were several new videos over on my YouTube channel.

  • San Jose del Cabo Travel Guide - An updated guide to a place I am grateful to have called home (and maybe will again one day 😜).
  • Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas - Cabo isn't for everyone, but I think it's an essential part of any trip to this region of Mexico. Here's how to make the most of this wild and crazy tourist town.
  • Cabo San Lucas vs San Jose del Cabo - If you are thinking about visiting Los Cabos and can't decide which of these towns is the right base for you, this video breaks down cost, hotel options, things to do, nightlife, and more.
  • Pack with Me for Mexico - This was a fun video to film and edit as I packed for my most recent trip to Mexico. If you are ever wondering how not to both over and under-pack at the same time, this video should help.

Mexico News from Around the Web

  • More and more Maya ruins are being discovered across the Yucatan peninsula as archeologists turn to laser technology to scan the forests, mangroves, and jungles that now cover what was once a network of cities that spread across much of this peninsula until 900 AD. You can read more about it in this article and this article.
  • Mexico's Black Friday, known as Buen Fin in Spanish, takes place a few weeks earlier than in the US. From November 15-18, you will find bargains all over the country, but especially for big-ticket items. If you live in Mexico or have a home here, this is a great weekend to get that new TV, cell phone, or anything else you've been eyeing up before the holidays.
  • The Mexican constitution has been amended in a way that critics believe gives the current party far too much power. Previously, the court system was able to veto amendments, but that has all changed. Read more about it here.

They are preparing to compete in La Iguanera

The mountain bike marathon will be held on one of the most beautiful and demanding routes in Mexico

On November 16 and 17, the La Iguanera Mountain Bike Marathon will be held, a competition held on the Oaxacan coast that will include categories ranging from 5 years of age to Garrobos Alfa, which includes participants over 60 years of age.

This cycling event was created as a posthumous tribute to Eng. Pablo Abner Montelongo Ramos, who left a very important legacy in the Pochutla community.

The mountain bike marathon will offer more than 900 participants one of the most beautiful and challenging routes in the country, crossing part of the coastal municipalities of Pochutla and Tonameca.

The route crosses different ecosystems, rivers and cliffs. On this occasion, 2 distances will be offered, a 25-kilometer route and the legendary 60-kilometer route. Both routes pass through beautiful places such as Zipolite, Puerto Ángel, La Boquilla and the famous Cerro del Vigía.

The competition will include a 25-kilometer route and the legendary 60-kilometer route.

In this fifth edition, La Iguanera will be full of top national and international athletes, including Antonio “La Liebre” Sandoval and his teammate Samanta Martínez, both from León Guanajuato and representing the internationally known Aquiles MD Team, and Roberto Sarmiento (Current Champion) and Miri Zuñiga, both representing the Galgos Cycling Team from the State of Chiapas. In addition, the race will be attended by cyclists from all over Mexico and even American and German cyclists.

In a short time, La Iguanera has positioned itself as one of the favorite cycling marathons in the country, because in addition to offering a very well-kept route, it is distinguished by the special treatment that the organizing team: Iguanas Night Riders, gives to participants and their families, who in addition to coming to compete take the opportunity to take a few days of vacation, thus leaving an important economic impact for the region.

The organization of this competition invites all cyclists to participate in this great event, made with great pride by the Oaxacan Coast for the world.
