Trans Sierra Norte is a multi-day all-mountain race over the beautiful mountains of Oaxaca, a city south of Mexico city. The trails you will be racing on, have been there for centuries used back in the day by local mountain communities to connect with each other and to exchange goods. These trails are 4–8 km length with more than 1000 meters of elevation gain, expect long, fast and rowdy stages during a 3-day backcountry adventure to then finish in the beautiful city of Oaxaca to party and celebrate the famous Mexican holiday "day of the dead". This region is also well known for its traditions, culture, and gastronomy.

A race that was designed to take the best Mexico has to offer and the most fun you will ever have on a bike.

"Yes, a party ride we will make and a Mexican bike story we will write."

For its first edition doors will be open for 60 riders only. With shuttle assistance, beautiful cabins and delicious food! This race won't disappoint anyone!

Citizens of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, rallied to the aid of a humpback whale yesterday after it became stranded on a local beach.

It was early yesterday morning that fishermen alerted municipal and Civil Protection authorities that the whale appeared to be stuck on the beach at Bahía Ensenada La Ventosa.

Over the course of three hours, fishermen, residents, visitors, environmental protection officers and Navy personnel pushed and pulled the animal — more than eight meters long and estimated to weigh some 10 tonnes — back into the water.

Helping supervise the operation was veterinarian Nayeli Aquino Rojas, coordinator of the municipal fisheries department, who concluded the whale had become disoriented during its northerly migration and pushed in to the beach by strong currents.

Hey kooks,

So I'm starting to plan my honeymoon, and am looking at Mexico, specifically Huatulco. My fiancee and have traveled a lot, and try to stay away from seriously touristy places, and this area of Oaxaca looks built up enough to have resorts/infrastructure but not the crazy swarms of folks on the Yucatan.

So, anyway, I was doing research and realized Puerto Escondido/Zipolite is just up the coast from here.

Anyone have any experiences in this area? My partner doesn't surf...I do, but am nowhere near good enough to handle real Escondido. I'm comfortable up to about 6-7 foot surf. Ideally I'd find a beach where we can hang/read, and pop in the water for a surf over the course of the day. BTW I surf Ventura normally, and we're coming from LAX. I'd need to rent a board, would I need a wetsuit?

Are there surf spots in Huatulco proper? Should we consider some other place around here? We're going in early November 2017.

Thanks for any advice, and yes, this is a honeymoon/surfing question, hope that's alright.

TL;DR - who has spent time in Huatulco/Escondido, and is there good surf around there in November?

hey fellow kook,

I spent about a week in Puerto Escondido and had probably my best surfing day ever there. There was a huge swell that brought in 25+ foot waves. I sure as fuck didn't surf those but I got to watch some people do some crazy big wave surfing. Later I went out to the point break at Playa Carrazalillo that that was sending out these beautiful 6-7 glassy beauts. I ended up staying out there for 4 or 5 hours and got super sunburned but it was totally worth it. That beach is also in a really nice cove with cheap corona and food. Not a bad place to spend a week.

What's great about Puerto is that there are 3 great spots that have different size waves. So I stayed at La Punta (best spot to stay imo) where there's a good point break, but when the waves got too big I went to Carazalillo. There's also the beach break that gets the biggest waves, but I didn't actually get a chance to surf there.

Also, there's a really awesome mountain town in between Cuidad de Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido called San Jose Del Pacifica. I went there with a bunch of backpackers and did shrooms (pretty much all drugs are legal there). There's also a little ritual you can pay do there where they basically hot box (sauna, not pot) a room and chant and get weird. It's a good time for sure.

Also, the food in Oaxaca is really good. I think it'd be a good honeymoon spot. Southern Mexico is awesome.
