Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca

Hi,
I am taking the shuttle bus from PE to Oaxaca on 27th Dec, just wondered whether anyone else has taken this recently and knows how long it takes and how bad the road is? Have heard mixed messages about it. I hear the road is ok, but with some potholes, single track and very windy with switchbacks. Do I need travel sickness pills?
Hope someone can help!

Well it takes a car to drive that route of 260KM or 156 miles just under 6 hours, if you look at a map red roads are main highways and yellow are secondary roads, about 1/2 of this trip is on secondary roads... If you are prone to road sickness I would go to Puerto Angel and take Highway 175 to Oaxaca......surety y paz

The highway from Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca is not much different from the road between Pochutla and Oaxaca. I´ve traveled both. If you want a smoother road, travel via Salina Cruz, a longer route. If you are prone to motion sickness, then take motion sickness pills, there was a recent thread about that topic on this branch.

Motion sickness was a real problem for me on the bus ride from Oaxaca to PE. You sit up high in the bus so you feel every turn and sway of the bus. It was so bad, that I couldn't sleep. I didn't have any motion sickness pill so I don't know if it would have helped. I had a already paid for a round-trip bus fare, but I ditched the return trip and paid the $$ to fly back.

I agree with #2 and #3. If you have the pesos, fly. Awesome, low flying, quirky flight usually.

If not, stock up on dramamine, a good attitude and enjoy, or at least endure. You have to go over the Continental Divide no matter what route you take. It's there. Suck it up. If you go through Salina Cruz, you are taking the hypotenuse of the triangle so a bit less dramatic, but longer in time. Why not bite the bullet and take the direct route, 131, from Oaxaca to PE, probably about 6 hours and $12 USD. Vale la pena.

I remember seeing big boxy comfortable-looking new VW vans (not the old little ones that are commonly used for combis) in Puerto Escondido in front of a hotel up in the centro that make the trip between Puerto Escondido and Oaxaca. I would probably take them if I were to make the trip now.

There's a terminal of buses like you describe, modern looking, at the corner of Route 200 and Av. Hidalgo in PE. The company is Cooperativa Turistica. The one you may be referring to leaves from the Hotel Luz de Angel (or something like that) on Av. Oaxaca a few blocks north of El Crucero, the main intersection on Highway 200 in PE. There are several of these transportation centers in both PE and Oaxaca. They seem to be replacing the old, rattling buses that used to make the route, whether through Sola de Vega or San Jose del Pacifico. The new "buses" leave every hour or so.

I took the mini-bus during the day and it was kind of a fun ride other than a little girl vomiting and feeling sick. Anyone prone to motion sickness should take some gravel after getting in the van. It's also a good idea to carry a few plastic bags that don't leak.

The ride itself is kind of fun because the road is extremely twisty and you can look directly down into the ravines and see cars and buses that didn't make the trip. When (if) you arrive at your destination, you can jump out, kiss the ground and proclaim "I survived!".
