Moderate Earthquake Rattles Southern Mexico
A moderate earthquake shook the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca on Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the afternoon quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 and struck at a depth of about 70 miles (110 kilometers).
Its epicenter was 6 miles (10 kilometers) east of the city of Palomares, near Oaxaca's border with Veracruz, and was felt more than 110 miles (177 kilometers) away by residents in the state capital, which also is named Oaxaca.
The Oaxaca state government said on its website that it was monitoring the areas where the quake was felt most strongly, but it had no early indications of anyone being hurt or of property damage.
