A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

Hey hows it going! i fly into mex city and busing to puerto escondido on the 8th of august to start a 5 month backpacking/surfing adventure through central and mex.

just wondering of any recommended places in puerto escondido to stay that are cheap! im travelling solo so looking for somewhere with a little bit of atmosphere close to the beach but still cheap.

also, i will be looking to buy some boards. is puerto the place to do it before heading south?

I've stayed at the Hotel Mayflower a couple of times and seen surfers there, plenty of atmosphere. It is cheap for Puerto Escondido at approx 130 MXN per night for a bed in a dorm, common area and shared kitchen too. It's close to the principal bay, so a bit of a hike to either Playa Zicatela for the big waves, or Playa Carrizalillo for the little ones.

The Mayflower's a good choice. It puts you in the middle of things at the bahia principal and Playa Marinero. Hostel Shalom sits at the top of Playa Carrizalillo, and I forget the name of the hostel that's out on Zicatela. They're all walkable, and the taxis are good at loading lots of boards and people.

There's several surf shops. You'll find them. This is probably the best you can do for buying a board, as far as selection and availability goes. Watch out for the baggage guy at the bus station. He'll ignore you until the bus gets ready to leave, then charge you twenty bucks to get it on board.

Dunno about buying, but we off loaded our boards for nearly nothing as we'd finished touring the west coast and were cutting in land. He had a fair few boards for sale at the time and told me nobody was buying. PE was the place I remember seeing boards for sale though.

Poor Shambhala, Poor Zipolite, the news is not good.

Thankfully no one lost their lives but it's really a disaster and as with all these things help is slow. People are just realizing how badly damaged things are. There is no water or lights. It's hot and there is no electricity for fans. Apparently there are lots of singing frogs that have appearred and it's very hard as one might imagine to sleep.

I am praying for my friends and family affected by this terrible Hurricane Carlotta. I am praying the government will get help to the people who have been badly affected by the hurricane so they can get on there feet again.

This year will be an important tourism year for Mexico and it's important the people of Zipolite can recover and benefit from it as the rest of Mexico will.

Poor Zipolite, it's so sad. It's just amazing that no one was killed. It's so sad about all the beautiful flowers and trees and all the peoples home and businesses that have been damaged or worse destroyed.

I visited Zipolite in 1999, two years after Hurricane Paulina and Gloria of Shambhala told me the scary story of how she had to hang on to the roof otherwise it would have blown away. Gloria is amazing but she getting on in years and her health has not been the best. I ask you all to please take a moment and say a prayer for Gloria and for Shambhala and for all the people she has working for her so that they can recover.

I love Shambhala. We love the meditation point and I was so looking forward to doing yoga up there and watching the birds and the ocean and just meditating. The sunset is so beautiful. We love the Karma Kleansing Ceremonies!
