A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Zipolite
Pagebanner default.jpg
Zipolite is growing backpacker beach destination along the south-western Pacific coast of OaxacaMexico. It is between the cities of Puerto Escondido to the north, and Huatulcoto the East. Neighboring villages include Mazunte, and Puerto Angel. A happy and expanding tourist town once known for its distinctive hippy vibe, Zipolite still has Mexico's only clothing-optional beach policy. You may recognize it if you have seen the Blockbuster film "Y Tu Mama Tambien".
This is a great place to go to relax and have fun on almost any budget. Seafood here is cheap and great. You can while away your days relaxing on the beach watching whales and dolphins pass by off the coast.

Get in[edit]

By plane[edit]

Huatulco International Airport is 45 KM from Zipolite. A cab from the airport is listed as costing MX$843 or something like that. However, you can bargain at the taxi stand, and at least one traveler reports that in 2015, a taxi driver agreed to a price of MX$500 for this trip. For a cheaper option, leave the airport and hail a cab across the street for around $400. Once you are outside the airport you can also take a collectivo or local bus to Puerto Angel or San Pedro Pochutla. A taxi from Puerto Angel to Zipolite is MX$8, and a collectivo from Pochutla is MX$12.
From Puerto Escondido airport a cab is posted as $700, or you can take a cab from across the street from the airport to centro or the mercado for 40 pesos and then take the blue and white mini-bus to San Antonio for $33, and then take a collectivo through Mazunte and San Augustinillo to Zipolite for 7 pesos. It takes a while, but its a nice ride and pretty cheap and easy to travel like the locals.

By bus[edit]

If traveling by bus, you can take ADO and several other bus services to Pochutla, the regional hub for the coast, then you will need to take a taxi or collectivo.
From Pochutla you can catch a collectivo on the main street right in front of the bus station to Zipolite for 12 pesos. One route will take you through Puerto Angel (the quick way) the other goes through Mazunte and San Augustinillo. A direct taxi will run you $100 more or less.
Taxis run from the nearby town of Puerto Angel for 8 pesos, or its a fairly pleasant, although dangerously narrow no shoulder 4km walk down the road. From Puerto Angel, you can catch a camioneta up to San Pedro Pochutla, where you can catch buses to Oaxaca and the nearby coastal cities.

Get around[edit]

Zipolite in its entirety is about 2km long, there is really no need for a motor vehicle while you are in town. Taxis and collectivos are abundant on any road. Main street is closed down to traffic around 5:30 or 6:00 when local shops, and restaruants start to open.
You can walk through the jungle to nearby towns farther west along the coast to Mazunte where you can see the famous Turtle museum. Collectivos will take you back, but be careful not to get caught out too late after they stop running (usually around 6).

See[edit] [add listing]

  • Playa del Amor This is the cove to the extreme east side of the beach. To get there you have to climb up the steps at the end of the beach. At the top near the restaurant (which is currently closed) is a great viewpoint for the entire beach. The more daring can go further up the side of the hill, on the pathway which is still being constructed. The small beach is very beautiful and the water is calm. This is where the nudists hang out when not at their hotels, there is a high concentration of gay men here too.
  • The perfect sunset A sunset in Zipolite is something not to be missed. Every night mother nature creates another masterpiece. The colors of the sky and golden brown sand couldn't be more perfect. The farther down to the east side is the best view of the sun and Roca Blanca, the guano covered rock just off-shore

Do[edit] [add listing]

  • Go surfing. This is a popular surfing area, but not too crowded to catch a wave. There are now 3 places to rent boards on the west side of the beach. Sometimes you can rent boards from the lifeguards on the east side as well.
  • Boogey board. The surf here is pretty amazing, with strong waves all the time. Many boogie boarders congregate by the rocks in the water on the east side in the early evenings.
  • Sit in one of the outdoor restaurants and relax. A couple of them as of this posting have free wifi too
  • Attend one of the occasional beach bonfires at night
  • Go snorkeling in Puerto Angel Ask for Byron Luna. He will take you out in his boat to search for dolphins, sea turtles and whales (in the whale-season), and then go to a nice beach for snorkeling
  • Fly up the coast. Ever 2 weeks or so a gentleman offers flights on his ultralight aircraft. He lands in front of Lyoban on the east side of the beach. A 12 minute flight will take you past San Augustinillo, Mazunte, and another beach I forgot. An amazing way to see the beautiful Oaxacan coast. $500

Buy[edit] [add listing]

  • Oaxacan cheese (any local store or abarrote). There are 2 types of Oaxacan cheese that are incredible. One is salty and stringy, and the other is crumbly and not as salty, with texture almost like ricotta. Its worth a trip to the local store to pick up a kilo.
  • Handmade lamps (On Main Street). Opens after 6There is an entire, almost warehouse size shop that sells lamps made of local coconuts. They have all sizes colors and combinations, you can even have one custom made for you. These things last for ever and are a great Zipolite souvineer! Priced from MX$45-800
  • Local Crafts (On the beach). all dayLike any other beach in Mexico, locals will come to sell their hand-made crafts. You can get sarongs, and "hippy" beach trousers for MX$80-120 and up. There is a guy that sells great hammocks on a daily basis. I bought a wonderful hammock chair for MX$200, he was asking $350 for it. Dont be afraid to bargain, abut do remember that most of the crafts are made by hand here, not mass produced in China!
La Providencia Restaurant (bar), Now at posada Las Casitas (Behind Hotel Alquimista),  9581009234Contemporary Mexican food. Open for dinner in summer and winter season. 15-20 usd.
Along the beach is a restaurant called "Sal y Pimienta" (Salt and Pepper). They serve fantastic food right on the beach. They have awesome burgers, fresh fish right from the ocean and much more.
  • El Alquimista not so cheap but maybe the best food in the town. The place is very nice and beautiful. From the main beach the place is behind the rocks (west) [1]
  • Teofilas (Behind the Lyoban Hotel Restaurant and Bar on the East side, in front of the rocks in the water.). 7AM to LateTeofila has been cooking in her tiny kitchen here for over 30 years. Not many tourists here, no frills, but clean, lots of locals and tasty food. The fish is wonderful and great portion sizes as well, try the Diavlo...its mejor! $30-$120.

  • La Providencia Restaurant (bar), on the back street roca blanca (by Piedra de Fuego),  9581009234Contemporary Mexican food. Open for dinner in summer and winter season. 15-20 usd.
  •   Don Franco's (Roca Blanca). It's on the paved street in Roca Blanca next to Memo's. There are two Italian restaurants, both good, both owned by Italians, and this one is great.

Sleep[edit] [add listing]

There are a large number of low cost rooms along the beach of varying quality.
  • Gloria's ShambalaRelaxed guesthouse perched on a hill at the end of the beach. Wonderful restaurant with tables on a cliff overlooking the entire beach.
  • la providencia restaurant baron the back street (by piedra de fuego),  9581009234contemporary Mexican fusioned food, outstanding choice in Zipolite. open for dinner in the summer and winter. 10 -13 usd.
  • Colibri Hostel (On the beach next to Sal y Pimienta). Cabanas right on the Zipolite beach. The place is run bun an American named Steve and some of his friends. They are very nice people and can help you out if there is anything you need.
The rooms are simple but only cost 50 pesos a night as of September 2011. There are shared bathrooms and shower. The hostel is located right next to a restaurant on the beach called Sal y Pimienta, and if you ask they will bring food over to the hostel. 50 pesos a night.
* El Alquimista Seems to be a very nice and comfortable place [2]
* Lo Cosmico A hippie place: Cheap and without luxury [3]

Connect[edit] [add listing]

Stay safe[edit]

The waves and currents in the sea are not to be taken likely. Be cautious when entering the water for a swim. Look for the red, yellow and green flags put up by the excellent volunteer lifeguards to see where is the best place to swim.
There is no real active police force Zipolite which means it's easy to come by drugs, and has been since the 60's. Smoking marijuana is pretty commonplace and tolerated, however, police look for people passing joints back and forth on the beach, so be careful when doing so. If you are approached by police, you can usually get out of trouble by paying MX$200. In the past, a few cases of mugging and rapes have been reported. There has been no major crime here for several years. It's generally not recommended to walk on the dark beach at night time alone. Make sure the place where you put your valuables is safe and well attended.

Escape to Mexico's best kept secret: Bahias de Huatulco

In the Pacific coast town of Huatulco, Oaxaca it's very easy to find pristine beaches and several places to swim, snorkel or dive, like in Parque Nacional Huatulco.

For regular travellers to Mexico, Cancun, Ixtapa, Riviera Maya are popular options, but for those who want a laid-back beach trip with plenty of natural beauty and distinct cuisine, Huatulco, Oaxaca should be next on the list.
Located on the south Pacific coast of Mexico, Bahias de Huatulco is a series of nine natural bays and several coves, with the foothills of the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains surrounding the area.
An area that wasn’t developed in the first waves of tourism, locals have protected their natural environment and made it a priority with more than half of the region included in the Nacional Parque Huatulco and limiting the number of hotel developments.
One of the bigger bays of Huatulco, Tangolunda Bay has calm waters and plenty of hotel options, such as Dreams Resort & Spa. With 330 days of sunshine each year and a daily average temperature of 28C, here’s five ways to explore this quiet Pacific coast town’s natural landscape, culture and cuisine:
Beach – with nine bays, there’s plenty of places along the coastline to discover sand and sea. Tangolunda Bay is home to many of resorts and there are over 35 beaches on offer from Santa Cruz to La Entrega. Take a boat tour from the Santa Cruz marina into Nacional Parque Huatulco to access pristine white sand stretches, tropical rainforest and coral reefs.
History –visitors can wander among the ruins of Bocana del Rio Copalito, an archeological site that sits on the traditional boundary between the Mixtec and Zapotec areas. With over 86 acres, the ruins are currently being excavated by Mexico’s Institute of Anthropology and History, revealing the lifestyle of the nobility who lived on this site in the first six centuries BC through newly-uncovered artifacts.
Shopping – the wee town of La Crucecita makes for a laid-back afternoon to discover local souvenirs, such as textiles, ceramics and handicrafts. The town’s zocalo (aka main plaza) has several street vendors with their arts and crafts, ice cream and coconuts for sale under the palm trees. Make sure to visit the local church with one of the world’s
The church of La Crucecita is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, who is painted on the ceiling. largest paintings of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the world on its ceiling.
Cuisine – for all those foodies who want to expand their Mexican food knowledge, the Oaxacan dining has many indigenous offerings such asmole poblano, a complex sauce made with a variety of spices and chili peppers and traditionally served with turkey. Modern Oaxacan cuisine includes a variety of mole sauces and revels in locally-grown and sourced ingredients like avocado, pineapple, seafood, insects and chocolate.
Libation – the literal meaning of this word is an offering, and for those in Oaxaca, mezcal is worthy of the reverence. Made in small batches at local palenques from the maguey plant, this distilled spirit has a smoky flavour and does contain a worm, a sure sign of authenticity. Although tradition dictates to sip this liquid straight, modern day versions mix mezcal with pineapple, banana, orange or chocolate.
Travelling to Huatulco:
Transportation – travellers can find package deals via Air Canada Vacations and Sunwing during the winter season, or access Huatulco via United Airlines, Delta Airlines and Aeromexico.
Just one of several pools at Secrets Resorts & Spa, located on one of the nine bays in Huatulco. Accommodation – couples should make tracks to contemporary-styled Secrets Resort & Spa. Located on its own bay, the stylish hotel offers spacious suites, all overlooking the sea. Multiple pools, a large beach area for swimming, snorkeling and sailing, several bars, 10 restaurants and nightly entertainment will keep anyone amused.
One secret – each room has a secret box for private delivery of room service (available 24 hours). The Secrets Spa offers multiple face and body treatments, all of which include an hour-long water circuit to stimulate circulation, relax muscle and erase stress.  Guests can also dine and enjoy amenities at the sister resort, Dreams Huatulco Resort & Spa, a family resort on a separate bay, accessed by a complimentary shuttle.
Dining – for a beach day within steps of tasty Oaxacan cuisine, head to Playa Maguey, with its numerous beach bars, including El Camaron Gigante, well-known for its seafood dishes, like shrimp-stuffed grilled pineapple and spicy grilled dorado. And for fine dining, tasty mole options and mezcal-pairing with dinner, Tamarindo Restaurant at Secrets Resort offers a memorable night of indulging in local ingredients.

Moderate Earthquake Rattles Southern Mexico

Moderate Earthquake Rattles Southern Mexico

A moderate earthquake shook the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca on Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the afternoon quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 and struck at a depth of about 70 miles (110 kilometers).
Its epicenter was 6 miles (10 kilometers) east of the city of Palomares, near Oaxaca's border with Veracruz, and was felt more than 110 miles (177 kilometers) away by residents in the state capital, which also is named Oaxaca.
The Oaxaca state government said on its website that it was monitoring the areas where the quake was felt most strongly, but it had no early indications of anyone being hurt or of property damage.

Zipolite — Zipolite, Mexico

. We found a nice spot in a little cove away from most of the nakedness!! There was a beach bar/restaurant right on the beach where we enjoyed lunch and cocktails :-) unfortunately you couldn t swim in the water here as the waves and currents were powerful, however it was fun watching the surfers battling with the waves and going in to waist height to cool down. Another day we headed to the next village called San Augustillo where we could swim. We had planned to surf but no one was out in the water and there didn t seem to be any rental places about, probably because it was nearing the low season. We were happy with where we were staying, San Augustillo didn t seem to have much about it being built for holiday makers rather than people living there. The waves were big though and it was fun trying to body surf them.

We were glad we ventured down the coast to experience the more local side of the Pacific. With a beautiful coastline and accommodation it made us reluctant to leave....
