A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Zipolite - Puerto Angel
I´m planning a trip to Puerto Escondido in mid july. My main purpose is surf,
dive and snorkeling and i wonder if anyone have been there recently, after
Carlotta. I´ve searched the net but could´t find any recent updates.

Unsure where you are headed... Zipol, Puerto Angel, PE or all 3. Plenty
of surfing to be had, especially in PE. The Oaxaca coast generally
isn't considered a snorkeling or diving destination. I've spent a lot
of time here and done very little snorkeling.

Carlotta caused significant damage, but it's mostly cleaned up.
Rebuilding continues, especially in Zipol andMazunte, but that
won't affect your plans. You'll be fine in mid-July. There have
been a couple recent threads about Carlotta damage, which

you will find when you search.

I was in Zipolite before, during and after Carlota, I would say
you will be fine, Zipolite and Mazunte had some water and
electricity problems those few days, but within 3 or 4 days
all was ok, I couldn't go diving those days because the port
authority closed all boat activity during the aftermath of the
storm, but all is fine now, as for diving I met the folks of
"azul profundo" they have the boats and the guides and
take you to a few places near Zipolite, like Estacahuite.

drMingo, how is the diving around Pto Angel? I've never
tried it. Is there much to see?

I found snorkeling at Estacahuite, a thirty minute walk from
Puerto Angel, similar to that at Playa Carrizalillo inPuerto Escondido,
but suppose it depends upon weather the day you visit.

Check http://www.tomzap.com/fish.html for description and
some photos to help you identify what you see (yellow-bellied
sea snake at Zicatela, and spotted moray eel at Carrizalillo,
are my two most notable sightings).

There's not much to see diving or snorkeling off the Oaxaca coast.
Visibility is rather unimpressive. On the other hand, there's a stunning
break near Salina Cruz - check it out on YouTube.

I wanted to go diving, BUT the day I was going to go June 13,
felt lazy, and did not go, then on June 14 the seas were rough,
on the 15th. it was impossible, I did try going the whole next week
but the port was closed for those kind of activities, so I left Zipolite without
going diving (this time), I did snorkel on the 12th. but it was notCozumel
or Thailand (in regards to snorkel that is), but all in all, even with the
hurricane it was a great trip.

Puerto Escondido

news-mexico
Puerto Escondido, commonly referred to as "The Mexico Pipeline", is an internationally recognized surfing paradise and desperately needs the help of the global surf community.
The town of Puerto Escondido was devastated by Hurricane Carlotta on Friday 15th June, 2012. Two children died when their house was taken by a mudslide, and one 56-year-old woman passed away when the wind from the Category 2 Hurricane flipp edher car. The beach sidetown has been severely damaged and is in need of urgent assistance to rebuild this community that thrives on tourism.
The Puerto Escondido lifeguards are in need of help due to all damage caused by the hurricane. They previous lyhad 8 towers along the beach at Playa Zicatela and nowthere’s not a single one of them standing after the hurricane. This is just one example of what is required to help rebuild the local community; another is to promote tourism back to the area to stimulate the local economy.
The International Bodyboarding Association (IBA) has launched a global campaign to “SalvemosPuerto” (Save Puerto).
The IBA is looking to raise US$100,000 for the base funding to stage the IBA Zicatella Pro at Puerto Escondido from August 8 – August 18, 2012. The event will be used as a platform to achieve the primary objectives of:
1. Driving tourism to the town of Puerto Escondido and to promote the area as a safe tourist destination in order to drive the local economy.
2. Raise funds and mobilise resources to rebuild the 8 lifeguard towers at Playa Zicatela.
The core campaignis to sell 5000 “Salvemos Puerto” t shirts @ $30 each to raise the required funding to achieve the above objectives. All proceeds go to the Salvemos Puerto Campaign.
The Industry has also donated over $250,000 of merchandise at no cost to help raise the required funds. The following limited merchandise packs will be made available for sale with all funds raised going to the Salvemos Puerto Campaign:
• $60 pack (only 500 unitsavailable)
• $80 pack (only 250 unitsavailable)
• $100 pack (only 500 unitsavailable)
Turbo Surf Designs, ReeflexWetsuits, InvertedandFreedom Fins are donatingproducts.
The campaign is to raise the first $100,000 prior to 8th July to the conclusion of the event via a viral campaign to raise awareness and funding globally.
Below is the final day clip of the 2011 Zicatela Pro:

Welcome to one of Mexico`s most popular beach retreats. Puerto Escondido

Puerto escondido, Mexico
Welcome to one of Mexico`s most popular beach retreats. Puerto Escondido is one of those places that pleases all. The year-round warm climate and white sandy beaches are an open invitation to all those in need of a tan. It attracts the younger crowd, couples families, the retired, both from Mexico and abroad. The differences in prices is huge, which makes Puerto Escondido an affordable place to stay. With no less than 4 main beaches (there are more!) with their own distinct setting, the different tourists can go about their way on the beach that suits them most.

The huge variety of accommodation caters to anyone`s taste and can be found near the center, uphill or close to the beaches. Taxis are plentiful and transport tourists to any destination in this widespread beachtown. The town is safe and has a pleasant ambiance and the locals are among the most service-oriented in Mexico.

Many watersports can be practised and some beaches even have good waves for surfing or taking lessons. Each November surfing contests are held here and rank among the most popular events in the region. There is also the possibility to rent bicycles, surfboards, snorkeling - scuba diving equipment, etc.

Restaurants offer a local and international cuisine (with great fish dishes) and are worth checking out before hitting the electrifying nightlife, where folklore, dance and live acts provide the entertainment.

alisa-travels: Mexico: Puerto Escondido

  1. Mexico: Puerto Escondido
Our Spring Break ended in Puerto Escondido where we took a van from Oaxaca City at 5AM and arrived in Puerto Escondido sometime in the early afternoon. Pto. Escondido is located at the very southern part of Mexico on the Pacific Coast. It is famous for one of its beaches called Zicatela Beach which hosts major surfing competitions. But this city also has very beautiful, quiet beaches with gentle waves as well. We visited most of them, my favorites were Playa Bacocho and Playa Coral.
We stayed at a hostel called Tower Bridge Backpackers. We got a really nice room for really cheap. We had a kitchen, our own bathroom, bedroom and living room all to ourselves with a hammock and a swimming pool right outside.
Playa Carrizalillo…a bit crowded with lots of families and kids. Lots of surfing lessons here as well because of the more gentle waves compared to the crazy ones at Playa Zicatela.
Playa Bacocho…our favorite beach because it was very deserted so we felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves…very difficult to get here though. We had to walk for almost half an hour.
Playa Coral is connected to Playa Bacocho…very beautiful with gorgeous turquoise water and white sand. There was a deserted hotel right by the shore, we didn’t want to have to walk all the way back (which would have taken an hour at least) so we decided to hike up our way through the deserted area. It was very sketchy and creepy, we saw an iguana on our way up…fortunately we made it up ok and saved some time.
We spent our whole last day at the famous Playa Zicatela, eating lots of yummy Mexican food. I wanted to go skydiving so badly but couldn’t afford it at the time so I will safe that for next time (my dream is to skydive in Dubai overlooking the beautiful man-made Palm Islands). But overall, I absolutely loved Pto. Escondido. It has so much to offer with tons of different kinds of beaches and lots of great food and fun activities. We took a bus back from Pto. Escodido to Mexico City which took about 18 hours…longest bus ride I’ve ever experienced but actually didn’t feel that bad!
