A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

San Agustinillo

Description
San Agustinillo was founded at the same time as

Mazunte, also part of the
Santa María Tonameca Municipality. It is a small
town surviving on farming
and small-scale fishing. The people of San
Agustinillo lived from the hunting
and exploitation of turtles for many
years, as it was the site of the turtle
raster. The Federal Government
prohibited the hunting of turtles in 1990.

This town has a beach approximately

4,265 feet (1,300 metres) long, that has
been divide in three areas. The
first is surrounding by protective rocks,
and its gentle waves make it a great
place to swim. The second has stronger
waves, and is on the west side
of the beach. Local residents are always
eager to offer visitors exciting boat
rides through the area.

Location
• San Pedro Pochutla: Is located 150

miles (242 kilometres) South of the City
of Oaxaca via highway 175 to Puerto
Angel. Approximate travel time: [5:00]
San Agustinillo is almost 15 miles

(24 kilometres) from San Pedro Pochutla.
Drive on Federal Highway 200, in the
direction of Puerto Escondido, until reaching
the town of San Antonio. Turn left
on a small paved road, until reaching
San Agustinillo,
out of Mazunte.

San Agustinillo has a beautiful beach:

• San Agustinillo Beach
San Agustinillo Beach is on the

open sea. It is approximately 3,281 feet
(one kilometre) long and 164 feet
(50 metres) wide. The golden,
medium-grained sand is gently
inclined and the greenish-blue water
is warm. There is a restaurant
and cabins for rent as well.

Location
Approximately 30 steps south from the town.

San Agustinillo Overview

San Agustinillo Overview

Four kilometers from Zipolite, the small town of San Agustinillo offers uncrowded beaches and swimable waves—just keep some distance from the rocks. A few restaurants, convenience stores, and bungalows round out the town. To take on the waves, rent some body boards, fins, or surfboards from Mexico Lindo y Que Rico (50 pesos per hr., boogie boards 30 pesos), on the western edge of town. Many beginners start here before braving the bigger waves at Zipolite. Mexico Lindo offers one-on-one lessons (350 pesos for 2hr.).
San Agustinillo is accessible via a Mazunte camioneta from Zipolite (every 20min. 6am-7pm, 5 pesos), or any Zipolite-bound camioneta from Pochutla. Find internet access at Malex, near the eastern edge of town. (12 pesos per hr. Open M-Sa 8:30am-9pm, Su 9am-8pm.)
Mexico Lindo also has some of the best rooms on the beach. New and clean with fans, private baths, and double beds, this is a great place to rest your head. (Singles and doubles 300 pesos, with ocean view 400 pesos. Cash only.) Across the street and up a hill, the cabañas at Villas Antrópolis don’t come cheap, but include private kitchens, decks, and beautiful views of the water below. Best for longer stays. (2-person cabañas 500-550 pesos; prices nearly double in high season. Also rentable by the month for significant discounts. Cash only.) For a cheaper stay on the other end of the beach, go to Casa de Huéspedes Kaly , which has extraordinarily well-kept, quiet rooms with big fans, comfortable beds with mosquito nets, and spotless baths. (No hot water. Singles 200 pesos; doubles 250 pesos. Cash only.) The adjacent restaurant for some ice cream or a beer (both 15 pesos). There are also simple breakfasts like fruit salad or yogurt with granola for 12-40 pesos. (Open daily 8:30am-1pm, 4-10pm. Cash only.)

San Agustinillo - A beautiful beach, good swimming, surfing and diving

The beach of San Agustinillo
The pretty little village of San Agustinillo just about 9 km from Puerto Angel can be reached by heading in a westward direction after passing Zipolite. (map)
For information on public transport: (see Transportation)

The village lies on a long beach parallel to an open sea with such an unpredictable surf that on some days you will find it very suitable for surfing but on others, just right for swimming and snorkeling. In both phases and where safety is concerned, its waters are far more recommendable than Zipolite as here there is no undertow.
Surf and boogie boards can be obtained at Mexico Lindo.
All along the beach you will come across many little restaurants providing deckchairs to unwind under the shelter of coconut trees and at the far end a beautiful bay invites those that discover it to drop by for at least a second time.

The village San Agustinillo
Yet it remains to be mentioned that behind the beauty of this place another tale must be exposed that is all but wonderful. For many years a factory on the town's edge was responsible for the slaughtering of up to 1000 turtles a day using their skin to produce leather.
Thankfully in 1990 the factory was finally brought to a stand still and their extermination forbidden by the government.
In 1994 a museum Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga was founded and constructed just a kilometre away in Mazunte.
Today in a place once haunted through its painful past the joyful sound of children's laughter fill the air as a primary school now takes its place on the grounds of where the factory once stood.

Playas San Agustinillo and Mazunte

About a mile west of Zipolite, a wide, mile-long, yellow-sand beach curves past the village of San Agustinillo. On the open ocean but partly sheltered by offshore rocks, its surf is much like that of Zipolite, varying from gentle in the morning to rough in the afternoon, depending mostly upon wind and offshore swells.
Small village groceries and beachside palaparestaurants supply food and drinks to the occasionalZipolite overflow and local families on weekends and holidays. Fishing is excellent, either in the surf from nearby rocks, by rented panga, or your own boat launched from the beach. Beach camping is customary, especially in front of beachfront restaurants, and at a few rustic, hammock-hung roadside ramadas, such as El Paraiso, at the east (Zipolite) end of the beach.
Remnants of the local turtle industry can be found at the rusting former processing factories on Playa San Agustinillo (west end) and Playa Mazunte two miles farther west.
The half-mile-long, yellow-sand Mazunte Beach, like San Agustinillo, is semisheltered and varies from tranquil to rough. Fishing is likewise good, beach camping is customary (as a courtesy, ask nearby business owners if it’s okay), and local stores and seafood palapa restaurants sell basic supplies and food.
San Agustinillo and Mazunte people, including a group of European (mostly Italian) resident-entrepreneurs, have been renovating their houses and building cabañas to accommodate an increasing number of visitors. Signs along the road and at the beach advertise their lodgings and restaurants.
