Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico - Planeta.com invites friends to put themselves into the picture for World Environment Day. Join us on June 3 for a photo safari in the Llano Park. A photo safari is a free, public event in which people are invited to take photos in a public space and sharing pics online using relevant social media including Facebook, Flickr, Foursquare, Google+, Slideshare, Twitter, YouTube and wikis as a means to encourage transliteracy: the ability to read and write using multiple media, including traditional print media, electronic devices, and online tools. The safari combines a slow-paced walk from the lions in the park to recently made carvings nearby. The safari is conducted in aplurilingual manner with an emphasis on Spanish and local indigenous languages. "The highlight of the trip will be our search for the bear carving on Calle Amapolas" said Planeta.com founder Ron Mader. "We will also look for the borrego cimarron and a frog. Baseball fans should be on the lookout for pericos in the stadium when Oaxaca plays Puebla." Participants will be asked to upload photos to Facebook and Flickr. Friends of the photo safari are asked to like, favorite, pin and tweet about these images. "Social bridging is essential to building strong, safe, diverse communities," Mader said, citing Nina Simon's recent blog, Building Community Bridges: A "So What" Behind Social Participation. Among the talking points for informal conversation: the green economy and the 40th anniversary of UNEP, environmental education, wildlife and how World Environment Day is being celebrated around the globe. It will also be an opportunity to discuss upcoming events including July's Guelaguetza, August's Indigenous Peoples Week and a proposed unconference focusing on local, slow and conscious travel in September. Meeting point, 11am on the northeast side of Llano Park at the Hector's news' stand. Ask Hector about the trees in front of the stand. Tips: Bring your camera or smartphone, extra batteries, drinking water, comfortable shoes and a hat. Kids and the elderly are welcome and this event is free.
