Spanish surfer Óscar Serra died in the early hours of the morning, local time, last Saturday in Mexico after hitting his head against the background, when he was trying to ride a wave on the beach of Zicatela, in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.
According to experts, Zicatela produces some of the best beach waves in the world and its height in the months of June and July are a claim for many of the best surfers in the world to ride them.
Serra, who had barely been in Mexico for a couple of days, went in early in the morning in search of good waves, despite the fact that there was a red flag on the beach, something that is precisely what surfers are looking for.
According to several Mexican newspapers, the Valencian surfer fell from a wave a couple of meters high and hit his head against the bottom.
Although he was rescued promptly, he could not be revived on the beach by the medical services that treated him due to the force of the impact.
The Spanish surfing federation has lamented the loss on social networks: “A day of big waves in Zicatela (Puerto Escondido) - today- has hit us very hard ... Our sincere condolences to family and friends for the loss of Óscar Serra . There are no words to describe so much pain… life is often unfair ”.
A similar accident happened on July 6, when the authorities of the state of Oaxaca reported an accident on the coast. Four people who were in Playa Aragón, in San Agustinillo, Tonameca, were swept away by the sea.
The State Coordination for Civil Protection of Oaxaca (CEPCO) activated the search and rescue protocol to help the victims. However, a woman was found dead, while two other people had to be hospitalized due to the severity of her injuries and another is missing.
Fishermen who were in the place helped two of the injured, but it was impossible to support the other two people. The wounded were transferred to the Regional Hospital of San Pedro de Pochutla and were identified as Juan David García Contreras, 20, and Gina Cruz Luis , 19.
The person who disappeared at sea was also identified as a 20-year-old man named Daniel Pérez Cabrera, who would be originally from the state of Oaxaca.
Oaxaca has beaches recognized around the world for their beauty and perfect waves for surfing. In addition to Zicatela, thousands of tourists pass through Zipolite every year , a nudist beach where thousands tan.
Every year, sponsors and residents of the state receive thousands of tourists, who gather in Zipolite to enjoy the well-known Nudist Festival during the month of February; However, this 2021 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic that continues to affect the country.
