A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

The June solstice is known as the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere and the winter solstice the southern hemisphere. The date varies between June 20 and June 22, depending on the year.

Varying dates

In the Gregorian calendar the June solstice dates vary. For example, it occurs on June 21 in 2014 and 2015 but on June 20 in 2016. A June 22 solstice will not occur until June 22, 2203. The last time there was a June 22 solstice was in 1971.
The varying dates of the solstice are mainly due to the calendar system – most western countries use the Gregorian calendar, which has 365 days in a year, or 366 days in a leap year. As for the tropical year, it is approximately 365.242199 days, but varies from year to year because of the influence of other planets. A tropical year is the length of time that the sun takes to return to the same position in the cycle of seasons, as seen from Earth. The exact orbital and daily rotational motion of the Earth, such as the “wobble” in the Earth's axis (precession), also contributes to the changing solstice dates.

The June solstice explained

A solstice occurs when the sun's zenith is at its furthest point from the equator. During the June solstice it reaches its northernmost point and the Earth’s North Pole tilts directly towards the sun, at about 23.5 degrees. It is also known as the northern solstice because it occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer in the northern hemisphere. If the Earth's rotation was at right angles to the plane of its orbit around the sun, there would be no solstice days and no seasons.
The June solstice day has the longest hours of daylight for those living north of the equator. Those living or travelling to the north of the Arctic Circle are able to see the “midnight sun”, where the sun remains visible throughout the night, while those living or travelling south of the Antarctic Circle will not see sun during this time of the year. For those living near the equator, the sun does not shift up and down in the sky as much compared with other geographical locations away from the equator during this time of the year. This means that the length of day temperature does not vary as much.
The June solstice marks the first day of the summer season in the northern hemisphere. The word solstice is from the Latin word “solstitium”, meaning “sun-stopping”, because the point at which the sun appears to rise and set stops and reverses direction after this day. On this day, the sun does not rise precisely in the east, but rises to the north of east and sets to the north of west allowing it to be in the sky for a longer period of time. In the southern hemisphere, the June solstice is known as the shortest day of the year. It is when the sun has reached its furthest point from the equator and marks the first day of winter.

The seasons

After the June solstice, the sun follows a lower and lower path through the sky each day in the northern hemisphere until it reaches the point where the length of daylight is about 12 hours and eight to nine minutes in areas that are about 30 degrees north or south of the equator, while areas that are 60 degrees north or south of the equator observe daylight for about 12 hours and 16 minutes. This is called the September equinox, which is also known as the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere. Many regions around the equator have a daylight length about 12 hours and six-and-a-half minutes during the equinox.
It is important to note that Earth does not move at a constant speed in its elliptical orbit. Therefore the seasons are not of equal length: the times taken for the sun to move from theMarch equinox to the June solstice, to the September equinox, to the December solstice, and back to the March equinox are roughly 92.8, 93.6, 89.8 and 89.0 days respectively. The consolation in the northern hemisphere is that spring and summer last longer than autumn and winter.

Useful Tools

To calculate the approximate time and date (according to Coordinated Universal Time) of the March equinox, as well as the June and December solstices and theSeptember equinox, click on the Seasons Calculator. These dates mark the beginning of the four seasons of the year, which are spring, summer, autumn (or fall) and winter. It is important to note that the seasons in the northern hemisphere are opposite to those in the southern hemisphere. Find out more about the Seasons Calculatorand links to useful tools, such as the Day and Night World MapMoon CalculatorMoon Phase Calculator, and Sunrise Calculator.
The World Clock can also be used to find sunrise and sunset times, as well as the current position of the sun in major cities around the world. Simply select any location that is available from the World Clock and the calculator will adjust the local time in that particular city.

Solstice’s influence on cultures

In ancient times, solstices and equinoxes were important in guiding people to develop and maintain calendars, as well as helping them to grow crops. It was important for many people, especially those who spent a considerable amount of time outdoors, to understand the seasons and weather, which played a key role in their lives. Over the centuries, the June solstice was a time when festivals, celebrations and other festivities were celebrated.

An impression of our Yoga Teacher Training by Maricarmen Chavez.

"Recently returned from a five day yoga retreat which as a yoga beginner was a special opportunity. Brigitte was an excellent and patient teacher plus her two assistants: Sue and Gustavo. The routine was what I was hoping for: meditation, breathing exercises and asanas to challenge. More advanced students were given more challenging work to do; there were even a couple of yoga instructors in the class. I made major progress including greatly reducing my back curvature.

The facilities at La Loma Linda were excellent. The yoga room is set up high with wonderful, open air views. All necessary equipment was supplied. Meals were taken there as well which helped develop a rapport among the group. "

Winter Solstice 2013The Winter/Summer Solstice Gateway will take place this Saturday, December 21. The 12:12 Portal and Full Moon gave us the energy to prepare for this Gateway. Between the Portal and the Gateway, we have taken another step in clearing the old 3D attitudes, beliefs and patterns in preparation for this giant leap forward into the New Earth and New Life. And in these last few days, take a good look at how you’ve shifted in just a week! With the Portal, for those who actively took part in it, we received more Soul Codes and further activated our Soul DNA. This has allowed us to have a heightened sense of Awareness that showed us where we’re holding ourselves back, has merged us more with Soul and has propelled us further in order to step through the Gateway fully ready to embrace Who we, in Truth, have always been, but have denied ourselves of that Sacred Truth.
The Gateway takes us into next year, when it is about merging fully with Soul, being completely clear of the old; duality. Do know, however, that depending on where you are in your clearing, that this is not a deadline, but rather an opportunity to move forward in a huge way. Whether you are ready to fully embrace the New depends on how much of the old you have cleared. No worries; know that wherever you are is perfect.
The Gateway will be open to walk through any time after the Solstice as well, so take stock of how ready and clear you are. At the least, the Gateway will put you in touch with what still needs to transform. You may still be feeling the physical manifestations of transformation. If you still are hanging on to the old, you may be experiencing pain. This pain is the resistance to change. You may still have expectations that the New looks and feels a certain way, you may hold judgment for others who you perceive are different from you, you may still be blaming circumstances and others for your inability to move forward, you may feel as though the Earth and Her lifeforms need saving (they don’t, for everything is in Divine Order and is in a state of transformation), you may still feel limited, victimized and cling to “the way it’s always been done;” whatever you notice and perceive as separate is where you are encouraged to let go.
Can you allow things to be just the way they are without the compulsion to rescue, control or fix? Can you be with others who vibrate differently than you and still maintain your own Peace and vibration? Can you have Compassion for all others without telling them how to feel better? Do you still think others can heal or help you, because you don’t believe you can do it yourself? Have you let go of attaching yourself to anything or anyone outside yourself who/that you think you need? (This doesn’t mean you push people away; it means you accept others, love them and honor where they are.)
As you let go, you open yourself up more to receive refined and lighter energies, thereby helping you shift into the New. Can you imagine how free you will feel without the judgments, attachments and expectations you have for anyone or anything outside yourself? Imagination is as real as what you experience in life on Earth. And what you can imagine, you are that. Eventually imagination becomes form.
Because we are holding so much more Light, we are seeing what is emerging from our subconscious. What a gift this is, for then we can release them, if you choose, and replace with Soul Essences (Joy, Love, Peace, Abundance, etc.). Thus New Life is created. While it is essential to release the old, it is best not to dwell there, for then you get caught up in self-pity and nothing changes. So place attention more on what you are creating; not on what you perceive you are without.
We are being called to step into our mastery; to be sovereign (knowing truly the glory of Who we are in Divine Truth and acting from this Truth). As we step into our mastery, and this Gateway helps us do just that, we merge with our I AM/Higher Self/Soul/Source. We allow our emotions to transform into unemotional Agape Love. We are the Compassionate Observers, in non-judgment or attachment to right/wrong, light/dark, this/that, us/them, etc. and we see and understand and accept that everything and everyone in our lives is for our highest evolution.
As we step into our mastery, we also see that each one is serving Divine Will in their own unique way. We see our lives as a perfect expression of Divinity and every thought and feeling and act is Love. Folks that have been doing the work of letting go and facing difficult choices as they arrive, may receive new purposes or an expansion of the purpose they are currently expressing. The masters (us) will feel fulfilled, will have no expectations and will accept What Is without “wishing it was different,” without judgment or comparison and are open to things shifting moment to moment. As you trust your guidance and honor your Path, you rise in Self-Love. And from this place you give of yourself in a way that you have never been able to give before. You give without expectation of receiving anything back, for that is conditional. Unconditional Love is Source Love and so as we let go of how our gift is received, we give more and in the giving we receive more.
We, through this Gateway, have our New Blueprint (far more expansive than our Original Blueprint) more anchored and we empower it throughout next year. This New Blueprint enhances our mastery, our mission and gives more understanding to being multidimensional. We are being asked to step up into our sovereignty and mastery.
Through this Solstice Gateway, we have a powerful opportunity to be Soul-driven. It will affect us on all levels. It marks the end of the old and the beginning of the New. Here is a suggestion for stepping through the Gateway into the New:
Create a Ceremony. This may include candles, crystals, your Guides and Angels…whatever you’re guided to do. You might create a circle of crystals and candles (the Winter Solstice is actually the “return of the light”) and sit in the middle. Bring in the Light to infuse you and your circle. Close your eyes. Before you see the Gateway. It will appear in a way that is perfect for you. When you are ready, step through. Notice who is on the other side greeting, loving and congratulating you. Make a commitment to be all that you are. You may be handed a scroll that is your commitment to being an ascended master. Sign it and then allow your experience to take you to wherever you’re guided. When you are done, give thanks and write down your experience, which anchors the energies.
See you on the other side!
~ Kara

Winter Solstice 2013: December 21 is the shortest day Last Updated: Saturday, December 21, 2013, 09:55

Zee Media Bureau
http://zeenews.india.com/news/space/winter-solstice-2013-december-21-is-the-shortest-day_898333.html
New Delhi: The official onset of winter has begun as the winter solstice this year falls on December 21 thereby making it the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere.

On a solstice the sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator. The solstice happens when the sun reaches a point where it will appear to shine farthest to the south of the equator, over the Tropic of Capricorn.

The reason behind the occurrence of winter solstice is that the Earth does not spin upright, but on an axis 23.5 degrees from the vertical.

In the southern hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs on June 21 or 22 when the sun is placed in the farthest north.

In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night, but the sun continues to rise later for some days afterwards.

Winter begins Saturday with the winter solstice. Or does it?
It depends on whom you ask.
Meteorological and astronomical winter seasons run along different time schedules. The former pegs winter as having been already under way; it started Dec. 1 and will run through Feb. 28. The latter defines winter as starting with the winter solstice, Saturday, Dec. 21 this year, and continuing through the vernal equinox on March 20.
RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take our quiz
The difference is temperature: Meteorological winter is defined as the three coldest months of the year, December through February, during which theNational Weather Service does its official winter record-keeping. However, astronomical winter is more generally accepted by the public and is based on the position of the Earth in its orbit around the sun.
Astronomical winter watchers will note that the US will receive just 9 hours, 32 minutes of daylight Saturday, which occurs at 12:11 p.m. EST. The solstice, which this year occurs at 12:11 p.m. EST on Dec. 21, is not a fixed date; in 2015, it will take place Dec. 22.
Those in the north made weary by a succession of cold, dark days have reason for hope: The days will appear longer each day through June 20, the summer solstice, as the midday sun creeps higher above the horizon each day.
The solstice is derived from the Latin words “sol” (sun) and “sisto” (stop). With the approach of the winter solstice, the sun’s highest point in the sky every day sinks lower and lower toward the southern horizon. On Saturday the sun’s retreat halts, after which it will appear to start moving northward. The reverse will take place on June 21, when the day will be longest.
Another difference between both categories for winter is that the winter solstice is not necessarily the coldest day of the year, nor does it even fall in the coldest month of the season. According to the National Weather Service, there is a delay between the shortest day and the coldest average temperatures, especially for most of the mid- and high-latitude locations.
While most winter watchers may cheer for the longer days, no place will celebrate more than Stonehenge in England, which hosts an annual celebration of the date. Many believe the Neolithic monuments were built as an astronomical observatory used to track the sun’s movement.
This week, a $44 million visitor center opened its doors to provide visitors a virtual “Stonehenge experience” before entering the monument area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, by foot or via shuttle.
Of course, it’s notable that not every part of the globe will experience a shortened day Saturday. While the Northern Hemisphere will see the sun rise and fall in about 9 hours, the South Pole will receive more sunlight than any other location on Earth. There, temperatures are frigid, however: about -10 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service.
