A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

EL TEMAZCAL, EL BAÑO DE VAPOR PREHISPÁNICO
En Mesoamérica, desde tiempos antiguos, el temazcal, “baño de vapor”, ha desempeñado un papel importante en la vida social y religiosa. El temazcalli (del náhuatl: tema, “vapor”, y calli, “casa”) puede definirse como “casa de baño de vapor”. En la zona maya se conocía como zumpulcheé, aunque actualmente se conoce como chuj, en mam; chu, en kanhobalán; tuj, en quiché, y pus, en tzeltal. Los tarascos lo llaman huriguequa; los totonacos, saq, y en Tajín se conoce como xiaca.

THE TEMAZCAL, THE PRE-HISPANIC STEAM BATH
In Mesoamerica, since ancient times, the temazcal, "steam bath", has played an important role in social and religious life. The temazcalli (from the Nahuatl: tema, "steam", and calli, "house") can be defined as a "steam bath house". In the Mayan area it was known as zumpulcheé, although it is currently known as chuj, in Mam; chu, in Kanhobalan; tuj, in quiche, and pus, in tzeltal. The Tarascans call it huriguequa; the Totonacos, saq, and in Tajín it is known as xiaca.
