A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

They intend to illegally seize the property owned by the recently deceased Gloria Johnson

  • Ambition haunts Shambhala

Alfredo Torrentera / Citizenship Express

Oaxaca.- A few days after the death of Gloria Hope Johnson Ramírez, a pioneer of Zipolite and nudism in Mexico, actors fully identified in the community due to their history of dispossession through threats and use of violence, have made clear, without modesty, his intention to keep all the green redoubt that the area known as Shambhala has, which thanks to years of conservation promoted by the present-day occisa is a refuge for various birds, animals and reptiles.

Without wanting to respect the will of Aunt Gloria, as she was known, which was to keep the place where she lived intact and she preferred to end her years modestly, always refusing opulence and dividing the place that represents a whole history of communal life given to her defense and preservation.

Meanwhile, the uncertainty of guests and residents remains latent, since fully identified people haunt the place stalking, ironically, they are the own children of those who together with Gloria and Toño Nadurille Telléz at the head of a handful of community members defended these lands that He tried to expropriate the state government in the 70s. Today their generations, full of ambition and greed, want their lands to sell to the highest bidder.

Zipolite, a history of land defense

Let us remember that thanks to the Dorados de Villa and people who gave their time and resources, they were able to revoke said law not after having suffered persecution and attempts to end their lives, as unfortunately happened with the defender Alejandro Cárdenas shot to death by those who wanted to keep him. Pacific coastline that started from Huatulco to Punta Colorada in Puerto Escondido.

Many people benefited from the distribution of land at that time and thanked these heroes at the time for their great sacrifice; Over time and while most sold their lands, Gloria continued with her love of nature, keeping pre-Hispanic and holistic traditions alive with ceremonies and events in her areas until the end of her life where she was fired between the sound of the snail and the drum. , in the absence of the majority of the population, what seems to be the preamble of what is coming; crouching, some conspire, while others pay homage to his great heart with his visit.

Lurking invaders

Despite having all the official and agrarian documentation that accredits her successor María Zalvidea Marín as the legitimate heir to the tradition and keeping the place intact, the threats to her person are latent to intimidate her and make her agree to her whims like what They have done with humble people who have been victims of their extortions and prior to the next assembly where the future of Shambhala will be decided, we hope that reason and justice will prevail as spirit in the meeting and the great legacy of Gloria Johnson will continue.

Already before her unfortunate death, Gloria Hope Johnson Ramírez had been stripped of part of her property by means of apocryphal possession certificates and influence peddling in favor of foreign businessmen and with the support of internal agrarian representatives of the place, a trial was initiated that after 3 years and in the absence of conclusive evidence of his alleged possession, the court's ruling determined that in an assembly of community members in Pochutla with evidence and official documents they will decide who would correspond to the land in dispute.
