A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Big eruption last night at Volcano of Fire

Officials warn of danger posed by lahars, which could result from heavy rains

There was more activity yesterday and today at the Colima Volcano with frequent explosions, glowing avalanches and pyroclastic flows of hot gas and rock, according to Volcano Discovery.
The Jalisco Civil Protection Unit said this morning that a significant eruption took place last night at 11:16, sending a plume of ash seven kilometers high.
There is also some danger posed by heavy rains.
The danger comes in the form of lahars, formed by a mixture of volcanic materials such as rocks, ash and pumice mixing with water and creating a potentially rapid flow of a concrete-like material.
It density is such that it can move rocks several meters in diameter and even houses, vehicles and trees, and it can travel up to 100 kilometers at speeds of 40 to 100 km/h.
People in Colima and Jalisco, the two states in which the volcano is located, are being urged to remain at least five kilometers away. A warning has also been issued for falling ash and that anyone with respiratory problems should avoid going outdoors in the case of a heavy ash fall.
The closest community to the volcano, also known as the Volcano of Fire, is La Yerbabuena, eight kilometers away. It has a population of 50-60 people who would be the first to be evacuated should that be necessary, said Luis Felipe Puente of National Civil Protection.
There has been a lot of activity at the volcano recently, including some spectacular eruptions in February that were captured by videographer Richard Roscoe.
It is one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico and North America, and is also one of the potentially most dangerous. It has been almost constantly active since 1994.
