Budget, Backpackers, Surfers, Beach Lovers, Naturalist, Hippie, Sun and Sand worshipers, Off the Beaten Path Paradise! Everyone is welcome at Zipolite!
Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before. Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.ivan

Hi Mexico-loving friends,
I hope this email finds you well.
It's been a sunny start to the month here in Baja and we have officially moved on from Todos Santos to a completely new-to-us part of the peninsula.
After a month in our casita in Todos Santos, it was time to pack our bags and come up with a new plan. While I loved Todos Santos, I missed being in a place where I could just walk everywhere.
The original plan was to head back to La Paz. We had a few apartments lined up to look at on the day we arrived and with the way rentals work here and how quickly they get snatched up, we were pretty confident that we'd be able to move straight into one of them on the same day.
Alas, the rentals moved even quicker than we did and the day before we were going to move to La Paz, all of the apartments we had been planning to look at had been rented.
"Should we still go to La Paz?" we asked ourselves.
We had just spent a sunny fun long weekend in Cabo San Lucas celebrating my 33rd birthday and after sharing some of the photos on Instagram, tons of people told us we needed to check out San Jose del Cabo. They promised colonial architecture, cobbled streets, and a bit more of a local vibe while still being as close to the beach as Cabo San Lucas.
So instead of taking our suitcase on a bus to La Paz to look for another apartment, we took a bus south to San Jose and booked ourselves into a boutique hotel near the beach for two nights. As luck would have it, I stumbled across a cute little centrally located apartment for rent on Facebook Marketplace.
"We'll just go have a look at it and see what happens," we said, trying not to get our hopes up.
It was perfect. A nice big kitchen, lots of natural light, fully furnished, absolutely incredible internet, and a big comfortable bed all right in the historic center of San Jose where we can walk everywhere, even all the way down to the beach.
If you haven't already, you can catch up with all of the videos that we made during our time in Cabo San Lucas here:
A lot of people have been asking about getting Covid tests in order to return to the US after spending some time here. It's worth noting that most hotels, resorts, and private hospitals are giving rapid tests. You can even get a test at the airport here in Cabo as well as at the airport in Cancun. You get the results in about 15-30 minutes so many people are just getting them before they check into their flights.
If you are visiting somewhere else, hit reply and let me know and I can try to find the answer to where you can get a Covid test while you're in Mexico.
Things are moving in a positive direction as many states have been moved back into orange or yellow following a two-week stint in the "red" which saw many states facing very tight restrictions with regards to what was allowed to be open.
You can see that full map and news of which states have changed here. Only Guerrero and Guanajuato remain in the red.
This government map remains the most up-to-date version, so save this tab to your favorites if you are interested in checking up on the status changes every few weeks.
As always, a great place to keep up to date with news about Mexico in English is Mexico News Daily.

OAXACA, Oax. February 12, 2021.- Authorities of the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla, on the Oaxaca Coast, determined to change to a red epidemiological traffic light from February 15 to March 15, as a measure to mitigate the spread of Covid 19. The agreement was made in a regular session of the Cabildo, so they asked to abide by the restrictive and preventive measures that this color of the traffic light implies, which represents the highest risk in the pandemic. They sent the official communication to the police agencies that include important tourist destinations such as Puerto Escondido and the Zipolite nudist beach. One of these offices was directed to the local parish priest, Pedro Felipe Noyola San Juan, to comply with the determination regarding the liturgical celebrations of the Catholic community. San Pedro Pochutla is the third municipality that determines to change from orange to red traffic lights, the other two are located on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. To date, this municipality has 183 accumulated cases, 18 deaths, 23 suspected people and 7 with the virus active.
