A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Fire in Zipolite devours property

  • 'Piperos' and firefighters from Pochutla extinguished the fire so that it did not affect more properties

ZIPOLITE, POCHUTLA. – Fire in Zipolite ended a business early this Saturday; Local 'pipers' and firefighters from Pochutla prevented the conflagration from spreading and affecting other nearby establishments.

The fire started around 4:20 in the morning, residents of El Adoquín in Roca Blanca, Zipolite alerted the El Pochutleco Firefighters and asked for the help of water pipe owners to put out the fire that consumed the premises where A bar was installed.

Immediately, Mazunte and Zipolite pipes; as well as firefighters from San Pedro Pochutla set off towards the site of the conflagration to extinguish the fire that could damage more properties.

The place where the fire started was in a house where a bar was set up, located between the Navidad and Carey inns.

While the water container units arrived, neighbors organized themselves to throw water at the fire, already with the pipes, the stream of water helped so that the fire did not move to other properties; The firefighters, with their tank car, managed to completely annihilate it and ensure that the fire did not consume more than what it had burned.

Fortunately, he only gave us materials as a result of the fire; The tenant of the place, Bob Hanmaford, an American national, Owner and CEO of Naughty Events, was unharmed and regrets the loss of his belongings.

Fires destroy negotiations

In this month of November, it is the second fire that occurs in Zipolite, last Sunday the 5th, a palapa was consumed by fire and in the early hours of this Saturday, the fire does its thing and consumed a house, enabled as a bar in this tourist destination.

It should be remembered that in June 2022; A few days after the passage of Hurricane Ágatha, the fire that started at the Nude Hotel, located on the Main Beach of Zipolite, consumed said establishment and moved to the neighboring Naked Hotel, which was also completely burned; as well as other surrounding palapas.

Immediate reaction module against fires on the Coast is urgently needed

At different times, the intervention of 'piperos' has been important, they are the first responders to support the conflagrations that have happened: just as in Zipolite, Pochutla and in Mazunte, Tonameca, in this last place, last week they also set fire to some bungalows.

Residents and tourism service providers of this vacation center state that it is necessary for municipal authorities, both from San Pedro Pochutla and Santa María Tonameca; as well as states coordinate to project an immediate reaction module for this type of contingencies and thus avoid events that spread and cause more damage.

'Piperos' and firefighters from Pochutla have helped put out the fires, however, they arrive several minutes later because they are moving from their bases; They start working when the fire has already done a lot of damage to the properties in question.

Firefighters base inoperable on the coast

For several years, at the beginning of the administration of the former governor of the state, Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, in the community of San Isidro Bajos del Palmar, on federal highway 200, construction of a firefighter base began, a building that has been abandoned and which until now has not been paid attention to.

This property would house state firefighters who would be on the lookout for contingencies that might arise in the region, especially in this part of the Coast that makes up the municipalities of Santa María Tonameca, Santa María Colotepec and San Pedro Pochutla.
