A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Oaxaca.-Even before her unfortunate death, Gloria Hope Johnson Ramírez de López had been stripped of part of her property through apocryphal acts of possession and influence peddling in favor of foreign businessmen and with the support of internal agrarian representatives From the place a trial was initiated that after 3 years and in the absence of conclusive evidence of his alleged possession, the court ruling determined that in an assembly of community members in Pochutla with evidence and official documents they will decide who would correspond to the disputed land.

Today, not even after 9 days of the death of the one who was the pioneer and initiator of nudism in Mexico, the same actors fully identified in the community return again due to their history of dispossession through threats and use of violence together trying to keep the entire redoubt green that Shambhala has and that is now a refuge for various birds, animals and reptiles.

Without wanting to respect the will of Aunt Gloria as they knew her, which is to keep that place intact where she lived and preferred to end her years modestly, always refusing opulence and dividing the place that represents a whole history of communal life dedicated to her defense. and preservation.

While the uncertainty of guests and residents remains latent as fully identified people haunt the place stalking, ironically, they are the own children of those who together with Gloria and Toño Nadurille Telléz at the head of a handful of community members defended these lands that they tried to expropriate. In the 70s the state government, today its generations, full of ambition and greed, want their lands to sell them to the highest bidder.

Let us remember that thanks to the Dorados de Villa and people who gave their time and resources, they were able to revoke said law not after having suffered persecution and attempts to end their lives, as unfortunately happened with the defender Alejandro Cárdenas shot to death by those who wanted to keep him. Pacific coastline that started from Huatulco to Punta Colorada in Puerto Escondido.

Many people benefited from the distribution of land at that time and thanked these heroes at the time for their great sacrifice; time passed and while most sold their lands Gloria continued with her love of nature keeping pre-Hispanic and holistic traditions alive with ceremonies and events in her areas until the end of her life where she was fired between the sound of the snail and the drum, the absence of the majority of the population was the preamble to what is coming, crouched, some conspire, others pay homage to their great hearts with their visit.
Gloria Hope Johnson Ramírez de López

Despite having all the official and agrarian documentation that accredits her successor María Zalvidea Marín as the legitimate heir to the tradition and keeping the place intact, the threats to her person are latent to intimidate her into acceding to her whims as they have done. With humble people who have been victims of their extortions and prior to the next assembly where the future of Shambhala will be decided, we hope that reason and justice will prevail as spirit in the meeting and their great legacy will continue, while everything can happen before said meeting, even having protection from municipal and state authorities.
