Zipolite, Oaxaca.
A ceremonial center that became a nude beach.
Playa Zipolite is a Mexican town belonging to the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla, in the state of Oaxaca.
Located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, 3 kilometers from Puerto Ángel and 230 kilometers from Oaxaca de Juárez.
There are many versions of the origin of its name, however, the strongest is that they say that the Zapotecs buried their dead here.
They were brought from hundreds of miles away.
It is also considered the "place of the snails".
This place was considered as a ceremonial center of the same culture.
Thousands of turtles came to these beaches to lay their young.
This was interpreted by the ancient apotheques as the beginning and constant renewal of life.
After the conquest, Zipolite was deserted while, in its neighboring town, Puerto Ángel, it became a port where goods arrived in smaller boats.
At the beginning of the 20th century, families settled in Zipolite and it began to populate exponentially.
This, because visitors from nearby areas gathered to observe the total solar eclipse.
The people who had attended to see this natural phenomenon were mostly “hippies”.
This is how they started swimming and sunbathing without clothes, thanks to their motto "love and peace" and to the rhythm of rock and roll.
It was then that the first Mexican nudist beach was inaugurated.
Currently this beach is known internationally because it is a legal and safe nudist beach.
Throughout the year it is possible to participate in nudist events and also activities such as walks, yoga, etc.
Finally, Zipolite becomes an open sea beach where walking naked is its best tourist attraction.
