A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

The victim was dragged out to sea due to strong waves caused by meteorological phenomena such as Hurricane Hilary

A 40-year-old tourist, originally from Puebla, drowned on the beach of Punta Zicatela, in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, as a result of the tidal waves generated by meteorological phenomena such as Hurricane Hilary —category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale— which moves to the west-northwest in the waters of the Mexican Pacific.

The victim, who was on the last day of his vacation, entered the sea but was swept away by the current; Lifeguard personnel arrived a few minutes after the incident, but the man was already without vital signs.

Oaxaca is one of the states affected by rains derived from various phenomena in the country: Hilary, tropical wave 23, higher atmospheric instability, low pressure channels and the presence of the Mexican monsoon.

Oaxaca.-On the Oaxacan coast, bathed by the waves of the sea, a "window" can be seen that the rocks formed over the centuries. This creation of nature inspired the name of a small village: La Ventanilla.

Continuing with our tour of my Corners of Oaxaca, let's get to know this beautiful place, Ventanilla, which belongs to the municipality of Santa María Tonameca, located on the coast, near Puerto Ángel and Zipolite. as well as from Mazunte.

The residents of Ventanilla are committed to working to maintain the life of the mangrove swamp, where different species live, and to conserve biodiversity.

In these lagoons where mangroves grow, an immense variety of crustaceans and microorganisms are produced that serve as food for turtles, dolphins and fish. When the bars break, that is, when the sea joins the lagoon, a phenomenon that occurs in rainy time.

As a Oaxacan and who have had the opportunity to travel through our state, for decades and on several occasions, I tell you that in Ventanilla I have seen one of the best community projects of our entity.

In order to share with other people, national and foreign, this natural beauty, the residents have organized themselves and formed a cooperative called La Ventanilla Ecotourism Services Cooperative Society 25 years ago, and which is made up of local people, such as Atanasio Martínez, Agustín Reyes, Vicente García, Trinidad Cortes and Rocío García, among many others.
Every year thousands of tourists from our country come to visit Ventanilla, from Mexico City  ,   Puebla, Veracruz and foreigners, from Canada, France and Germany. Recently there was the German photographer, Harald Ferber.

In Ventanilla, you can enjoy the tourist services, in addition to unforgettable mangrove tours and around the island. These tours are carried out in canoes, motorized boats to protect the habitat and where the visitor will be able to discover the mangrove swamp and see different birds, iguanas, and crocodiles in their natural environment.
The duration of this spectacular tour is approximately an hour and a half, and halfway through the journey, there will be a stop on the island, where you can enjoy food and drinks at very reasonable prices. offered by the same cooperative.

In this place you can visit the Crocodile Museum and the crocodile, where there are crocodiles from newborns, which are protected until they grow up, and then released.
The residents also work a nursery created to support mangrove reforestation. It should be noted that after hurricanes since 1997, and there have been several, they have to clean the lagoon and canals as well as reforest the area and rehabilitate crocodile farms.
At the window you can also enjoy the sun, the landscape and a delicious meal in the small restaurants of the place during the day. and you can spend the night in one of the cabins that are rented and listen to those sounds of nature.
It is undoubtedly an extraordinary community initiative, which I have had the opportunity to see its growth from the beginning, and one of the best projects in our State, which allows us to learn and establish a way of life based on respect for nature and conservation. .
Ventanilla, magical place and adventure in the mangrove, which is part of the "Rincones de Oaxaca".
