A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

Zipolite is a beach located on the Mexican Pacific coast , considered the nudist paradise of Oaxaca , which is very attractive for its impressive views, its rocky headlands, its strong waves, a very pleasant climate, coral reefs and protected natural areas, in addition to have a rich gastronomy that together is the perfect combo for national and international tourists.

Although you can find in the Huatulco - Puerto Escondido tourist corridor hundreds of luxury restaurants combined with local snacks, in Zipolite you can find a wide variety of high-rise restaurants serving French, Chinese, Indian and Italian food, but especially from the typical gastronomy of Oaxaca , which you cannot miss.

Therefore, if you are preparing to go on vacation or go for a walk to Zipolite and relax in this dream place, we tell you what are some of the typical dishes of this Oaxacan corner , so that you take advantage and have a complete gastronomic experience, from main dishes, snacks, even desserts and drinks.

What to eat in Zipolite, Oaxaca?

  • The 7 moles

One of the most internationally recognized dishes of Oaxaca are moles and in Zipolite you can find the seven moles, which are chichilo, yellow, tablecloth stain, green, red, red and black.

  • Tasajo

Jerky is a cut of beef that is regularly smoked to leave the meat dry and slightly salty for preservation. The jerky can be ordered grilled, roasted or cooked in sauce, in addition to being typically enjoyed in Las Tlayudas.

  • Tlayudas

They could not be missing, they are corn tortillas of about 30 centimeters in diameter, very thin and heated on the comal to make them crunchy, like toast. On the tortilla to which a thick and burnt fat obtained from the frying of the pork rind called seat is spread, then a base of refried beans, jerky, cheese, tomato and sauce. A delight!

  • Fish marinade

This dish is made with fish that is left to marinate in lemon juice and after a long time resting in the citrus it is added to a sauce based on onion, tomato and finely chopped chili peppers, crumbled, combined with other ingredients and cook over low heat for about 5 minutes.

  • Empanadas

They are one of the snacks that you can not miss trying in Zipolite, since there are from those that have only cheese, to those that include pickled fish.

  • Fish and shellfish

You can find a wide variety of dishes with fish and seafood such as battered shrimp, shrimp cocktail, fish tostadas, oyster and octopus, fish ceviche, fish fillets, garlic mojo shrimp, lobsters, among many more.

  • Tamales

You cannot miss trying some delicious Oaxacan tamales, because there they take on another sense in taste since they are made of corn dough wrapped in a banana leaf and filled with chicken, pork or iguana.

  • Mezcal and fruit water

To accompany all these delicacies, do not miss the typical Oaxaca mezcals and a delicious water of typical fruits of the region, surely you will not want to return after these fantastic experiences.

  • Typical sweets

Don't miss out on a typical sweet for dessert, choose from a variety that includes rice pudding, corn cake and others less known such as nicuatole, chickpea sandwich, chickpeas in honeydew, nanches in sweet and the sweets.
