A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

Welcome to Zipolite

There’s a stark-naked dude with dreadlocks meditating on the beach, a bobbing crowd of surfers bravely fighting aggressive waves, a couple of aging hippies looking (apart from their cell phones) like they’ve just arrived in a time machine from 1975, and a local artisan shop doing a roaring trade in Frida Kahlo bags. Welcome to Zipolite, a chilled-out strip of palapas, beach shacks and intentionally rustic boutique hotels that hasn’t yet been discovered by big resort developers or people who play golf.

The largest of the three beach towns that decorate the coast west of Puerto Ángel, Zipolite is known for its surfing, clothing-optional beach and unashamed ‘do nothing’ vibe. Plenty of expats have discovered its tranquil charms and opened small businesses (most notably Italians), but the place still retains a touch of erstwhile bohemian magic. Long may it continue.

    • Playa La Boquilla

    Tiene arena dorada de grano medio y su pendiente es fuerte. El agua es templada con tonalidades verdes y azules y con oleaje suave. El área de mar tiene poca profundidad por lo que es posible practicar el buceo libre y la natación.

    Localización
    La entrada a esta playa se encuentra aproximadamente a 3 kilómetros (1.86 millas) al Este de Puerto Angel en dirección al entronque con la carretera Federal 200. Desvíese a la derecha por un camino de brecha en malas condiciones. Se recomienda se haga la visita transportándose en lancha.



    It is a small beach 120 meters long by 20 wide. It has golden sand medium and its slope is very steep. The water is warm greenish-blue and soft waves. The sea area is shallow so it is possible to practice snorkeling and swimming.
    Location: The entrance to this beach is about 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) east of Puerto Angel in the direction of the junction with highway 200. Turn right for a dirt road in poor condition. We recommend the visit occurs transported by boat.

    For reasons beyond my comprehension, I am continuously drawn back to the same beautifully bizarre beach full of vibrant murals, waves to kill, fire dancers, and hippies selling vegan cakes naked on the beach.. the name literally means “beach of death” in Zapotec, but strangely enough it’s always been a place that brings life to me. Over the years, the weirdness of this place has grown on me like the stray dog that’s been following me around since breakfast. Today I think I just want some time alone to think up new designs, but the universe has other plans. So when a stranger asks if he can sit down and play his Tibetan singing bowls to realign my chakras, I accept his gracious invitation and take it as a commonplace occurrence - just like reading the morning paper and drinking a cup of coffee...
