A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Watching and waiting in Huatulco

We've been anchored in Bahia Santa Cruz in Huatulco for a few days now, preparing to cross the Tuhuanapec.  The anchorage here is shallow, comfortable and beautiful. We strongly recommend it!

                                                             Bahia Santa Cruz, Huatulco

We are waiting for a clear weather window to cross the Gulf of Tuhuanapec into the southernmost region of Mexico.

The Isthmus of Tuhuanapec (the red line above) is where wind can accumulate and blow rather fiercely southward from the Carribean, across the small land bridge and into the Pacific. Crossing this area from northwest to the southeast is about 240 miles.

We are waiting with several other boats for a good 3 day weather window, at which point we will all jump together to make the passage. Our plan is to leave on Sunday if the weather holds.

But if we must wait SOMEWHERE, it is hard to imagine a lovelier place than Huatulco.

The lovely center square in Bahia Santa Cruz, Huatulco.
These shady tables are Wi-Fi ready!

Chris and I walked the two miles to the adjacent town of La Crucecita.

The catholic church there is one of the most beautiful buildings I've ever seen. The walls and ceilings are covered with colorful murals by the artist Jose Angel del Signo.

One of the ceilings inside the church at La Crucecita

I was simply awestruck with the beauty of it.

After a long time seated in the magical granduer of the church,
we explored the little town of La Crucecita.

This friendly Huatulco fisherman proudly displays his t-shirt in this, my second in an occasional series: "Innocent Mexicans who unknowingly wear mildly inappropriate donated American t-shirts." :-)

The stairway up to Cafe Juanita in Huatulco promises everything
                                             that makes a cruiser's heart go pitter-pat...especially:

...my Shangri-La. This titanic book exchange here at Cafe Juanita's
(where I write these words) brought tears of joy to my eyes...

I found this sign an existential puzzle. But that's always been my problem:
                                                                  I think too much.  :-)

Huatulco, a Mexican Holiday to Find Your Inspiration in Nature

19 MARCH 2012 NO COMMENT

Huatulco, Mexico

The area of Huatulco, in the south of Mexico, has 330 days of sunshine a year, an average temperature of 28 °C and 22 miles of sandy beaches. Are you starting to think of your Mexico holidays already?
Wait, there’s a lot more to this place than data.
Most Huatulco resorts have a genuine feel about them, and a very different attitude from other popular Mexican names such as Acapulco and Cancun, whose fame often comes with larger crowds of tourists.
This is an area that has gone unnoticed for a long time, and it was only in the eighties that the Mexican government eventually decided to start developing it for tourism.
Bahia de Santa Cruz, Capilla de Santa Cruz and Playa Santa Cruz are the three main bays which are part of The Bahias de Huatulco, stretching over a total of 16 miles.
Bahia de Santa Cruz, the most central, has all it takes to satisfy tourist needs, with activities that include excursions, sailing, scuba diving, snorkelling and jet ski, while Playa Santa Cruz boasts the best and most celebrated beach of the area, with hot, white sands and crystalline water.
To get the best out of Huatulco, though, head west to find the kind of area where you can lose yourself in nature, away from mass tourism.
Ideal for recovering the inspiration sometimes taken away by the frantic pace of modern life, the beaches encompassed by the National Park of Huatulco, a protected area created in 1998, are less developed and naturally richer.
While 723 different species of animals are living on the land, the bays are host to the most impressive corals of the Pacific Ocean as well as to an incredible variety of marine species.
This is why no other coastal area in the American Continent can appeal to nature lovers as much as Huatulco. The Green Globe certification, which made it the first sustainable tourist area in the Americas and the third in the world, is there to prove it.

 Water Roughness
Each day before our trip I have been looking at the live webcam in front of Dreams. The bay has always looked calm, but today there is white on top of the water all over the bay? Any idea what that is? It doesn't look particularly rough, and it isn't that windy either?

1. Re: Water Roughness
February and March are the months with more wind, some days more then others; Tangolunda Bay can be quite rough even with no wind.

2. Re: Water Roughness
Yes, we agree. We live in Bahia Chahue where the surf can be rough and unpredictable, though on other days it is calm and inviting. That said, there are other bays such as Entrega and San Agustin that are usually calm, and consequently usually quite crowded with sun worshipers and snorkelers.
