A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

Young people from Sweden come to Zipolite beach for celebrating MIDSUMMER  is a swedish tradition that is celebrated every year on midsummers eve. 

It is common to make wreaths out of birch leaves and wildflowers to put in your hair (like some of us had on the beach), and to make a midsummerpole out of birch and wildflowers as well, to dance and sing around. 
Midsummer is a swedish tradition that is celebrated every year on midsummers eve, which falls between the 19-25 of june. We gather friends and family to celebrate togheter, and even though the celebrations can vary between families there are some typical things most swedes do during midsummer! 

It is common to make wreaths out of birch leaves and wildflowers to put in your hair (like some of us had on the beach), and to make a midsummerpole out of birch and wildflowers as well, to dance and sing around. The typical dance to do around the pole is called ”små grodorna”, which translates to ”little frogs”. The midsummerpole tradition origins back to Germany, and was adapted in Sweden during the middle ages. 

Traditional midsummer food is cooked dill potatoes, salmon, pickled herring and strawberries. It is around midsummer that the first swedish strawberries are being sold, so it is a real luxury to have that on the dinnertable! We also consume a type of alcohol called ”snaps” which is similar to a shot, and it is common to sing a ”snapsvisa” before you drink it! Some people make their own snapsflavours at home but you can also but them in the store. 

There is also an old tradition where you pick 7 different flowers during complete silence before putting them under your pillow, the legend says you are then to dream about the one you’re going to marry!

In many families,usually do some games like a penthatlon, music quizess and play card games. These are not exclusive to midsummer, but it is a great time to play games and spend time with friends and family.
