Oaxaca, San Jose de pacífico, Zipolite (2-10 May),
The south of Mexico, apart from tourist areas, (even) more affordable than Central - and Northern Mexico. That money also for a nice hostel in Oaxaca where I stay (€ 7 per night). In my room I met Kyle; an American, and Ocean; Chinese from Canada. After what we go with 2 mexicana and practice Spanish, we taste the local drink mezcal and go in the evening the "fight of the century 'look; Mayweather vs. Pacquio. And that's actually quite a nice sensation in a country where one is idolized by two sports: football (BeenthereDonethat) and boxes. Each bar is completely packed with people; so did ours. We look half hours in a darkened pub where all but about one thing: boxes. But you simply do not check boxes without beer. So when the referee blow his whistle and calls out Mayweather winner, we need to do something else. But not in a pub abandoned by everyone. A Mexican male (year or 18) still know a nice place. We are with his 3s, so why not?
The club feet which go from the floor, there is even an effort to salsa and we have a fight over a bottle of liquor. Anyway, friends (and "enemies") are always made easy when liquor flows, and the next 2 days I pull up with these guys. After some sightseeing of this magnificent colonial city attract Ocean & I to San Jose del Pacifico.
San Jose del Pacifico is a hamlet at 2300 m altitude known for Mushrooms. So when we arrive via a scenic drive through the mountains we arrive at the most trippy hippie & hostel that I have ever seen. What a hazy types are saying here! I talk with my neighbor who has come from England to Mex to 'study'. No engineering or business administration, but the effects of DMT - life alte ring Substances including mushrooms - on the human body. Practically, it is mainly as often as possible go to the fucking, experience what it does to your body, and then say that you have become a better person. Example of an autodidact pur-sang. After more interesting conversations with a dozen fuzzy types, everything starts to float later in the evening, and so I whiz in my bed: an unwashed mattress with a bed sheet probably never been washed. But because it is quite cold so high in the mountains I've klod needed! After a night on the cold ground suffering, I am at 6am between two Rastafarians which is less than 20 cm are mine. That's just too close! I get up with cramps in the body, and walk through the living room (which is still blue state vanalles what is smokable) to the toilet. That is fat rancidity and therefore decides that it is better time to go. A-just a little too comfortable ... but a nice experience!
With Rob - an Englishman who has taken 2 years to work his law degree and then spend the rest of his life in a hamlet in Mexico - and Ocean we seek a mountain hut for less than € 2.5 pp We chill because of the view, the stiltje and smoke. But mushrooms are not there! And while there is certainly room for a good conversation. We talk about politics, ideas about how things can be better and especially the ever-growing world population that is selfish by nature and super short-term oriented. After 3 days without any luxury (no shower, 'normal' toilet, very dirty beds etc), my hygiene standard is as good as gone. Ocean and I decide that we be able to relax on the beach.
We go to Zipolite. That's a small village on a beautiful beach, which - like more Mexican coastal villages - mostly run by Gringo's. Which are simply great places to let the busy Western life behind you. So we do that too. 4 days we chill, lie in a hammock, relax from the heavy tours from 50 meters to the supermarket and see how drunk hippies of their seats fall off. In the evening we mostly go to bed very early, to wake up the next day at the beach.
When the urge comes back to really what to do, we travel a day to San Cristobal de las Casas. And that's quite a bit dispense with 5 buses, heat and a lot of stench. 4 hours we are surrounded by a pungent smell of shit a full diaper that looks 25 degrees to evaporate ... * sigh *. And even after a long day traveling, we are not even at the destination, but in Tuxtla Gutierrez! It's late, and do not even take a bus to San Christobal (many bad stories about muggings). Our choice for 'colectivo's' - Mexican transport for poor people - we saved at most € 7, to which then directly edit video in a luxury hotel, because we do not want in a dark city looking for a cheap hostel.
The day after we travel together to San Cristobal de las Casas, the Maya capital in the Chiapas region. There I meet this indigenous people and use her visit even more amazing places and meet again in hostels a lot of kooky and fun types ...
