Let’s say you live in Seattle and you need to get to Chicago June 21-28 for your sister’s wedding. You search on Google Flights and find that the cheapest roundtrip is $424 nonstop. Not a great fare, but you have little flexibility and it’s a peak summer trip.   Before you book though, there’s one more step that will ensure you don’t overpay.  Why you should always search one-way domestic flights The price of a roundtrip domestic flight is simple: the outbound flight price + the return flight price. Take the $424 fare above. Combine the outbound flight price ($239) and the return flight price ($185) and voila, $424.   Though Delta has the cheapest roundtrip price, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it has the cheapest one-ways. Indeed, if you instead search for a one-way outbound flight, United actually has the cheapest fare.   In other words, if you only searched roundtrip, the cheapest fare you’ll see is $424 because both flights are on a single airline (in this case, Delta). But by searching for two one-ways, you’ll get a $206 United outbound and a $185 Delta return, giving you a roundtrip price of $391.  Best practices Sometimes Google Flights (or other flight search engines) will tip you off that fares are cheaper on different carriers, with a little “Separate tickets” note like this:   But it’s sporadic and they often miss cheaper one-way options, like the Seattle-Chicago example above. Always double-check for yourself. This trick only works for domestic flights, not international. For reasons too complex (and frankly, boring) to type out, one-way international flights tend to be exorbitantly expensive, whereas the roundtrip price gets discounted significantly.
