A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

To contain the contagion of coronavirus, the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla announced that starting Monday, February 15, it will enter a red traffic light, maximum alert

Juchitán de Zaragoza.— To contain coronavirus infections, the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla announced that as of Monday, February 15, it will enter a red light, maximum alert, due to the increase in cases and deaths from Covid-19.

Through a statement, the municipal council announced that a checkpoint will be installed in the municipal agencies of Puerto Ángel and Zipolite,  the main tourist destinations in this municipality on the coast, and in the municipal seat of Pochutla, in addition to the use of the beaches throughout the municipality will begin from 07:00 am to 7:00 pm. The hotel occupancy must be at 20% of its capacity, the use of face masks will be mandatory and whoever does not respect the restrictions will be sanctioned.

He informed that tours will be carried out throughout the municipality of Pochutla to announce the color of the epidemiological traffic light and monitor compliance with new provisions such as the closure of canteens, bars and nightclubs, with the surveillance of the police forces made up of the municipal police, state and federal through the “Stay at home” operation.

Commercial businesses and markets may be open from 07:00 to 19:00, he said. The restaurants will operate from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., giving priority to take out food and the presence of minors in any type of establishment is prohibited, in addition, the installation of flea markets throughout the municipality is prohibited.

Likewise, all social, political and sporting events are suspended.

The beach destinations belonging to San Pedro Pochutla had, from December and January, a great demand for local and international tourism. At the beginning of the year, the destination was the center of the controversy after Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, had vacationed on these beaches, despite his repeated call to stay home .

Now this municipality announces the change of color in the traffic light due to epidemiological risk before Covid-19 at maximum alert, a month after in the capital of the state and the municipalities with the highest population density of Oaxaca reported an increase in infections.

The Oaxaca Health services reported that as of the holiday season celebrations, Covid-19 infections in Oaxaca grew 300% and this has been reflected in the report of up to 20 saturated hospitals.

Faced with the omission of  canceling parties and mass meetings , which have put the lives of the population at risk, in San Juan del Río, Santiago Choápam, 400 infections were registered and currently a medical brigade arrived in the town of San Francisco Cozoaltepec, in the municipality of Santa María Tonameca also on the Coast, to control the transmission of Covid-19 after the celebration of a religious festival in January.

The municipal authority called on citizens to respect the new provisions so that medical services do not collapse, recalling that the capacity of local and regional hospitals is already exceeded, that the color of the traffic light will depend on the increase or decrease of the cases for Covid-19.

According to the Oaxaca Health services, San Pedro Pochutla has 188 confirmed cases and 17 deaths; the Costa region has 1,866 confirmed cases and 171 deaths; While the state reached 37,857 cases and 2,708 deaths from Covid-19.
