A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

San Miguel de Allende best destination in Mexico for 4th consecutive year

It was No. 1 in the world for two years, but this year dropped into second place

For the fourth year in a row, Travel + Leisure magazine chose San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, as the top city travel destination in Mexico.
In the magazine’s “World’s Best” rankings, which are chosen by surveys of over 17,000 Travel + Leisure readers, San Miguel placed second in the World’s Best Cities section.
The colonial city that is home to a large expat community won World’s Best City in 2017 and 2018, but this year narrowly fell behind Hoi An, Vietnam, which jumped from eighth place in 2018.
The magazine describes San Miguel as “a glamorous and sophisticated city in the heart of Mexico, surrounded by wonderful vineyards and beautiful landscapes to do some adventure tourism without losing its traditional touch . . . . One reader called it ‘a unique art community in the mountains, with a mix of rich history and amazing food.’ Another fan of the city praised its architectural diversity: ‘Gorgeous, sumptuous modern interiors are mixed with 500-year-old façades. You never know what delights you’ll find behind one of the beautifully carved doors.’”
Mexico City jumped from 11th place to fourth place this year, while Oaxaca city came in fifth place. Describing the former, one reader said, “One of the most exciting cities in North America. I go at least once per year, and every time I do it’s a new and exciting experience.”
Oaxaca earned kudos for its food scene and cooking schools.
Mexico was the only country with three cities among the world’s top 15; Italy, Japan, the United States and Thailand each had two.
San Miguel’s Matilda Hotel & Spa came in 18th place in the World’s Best Hotels rankings, the top spot for a Mexican hotel. Matilda was one of eight Mexican hotels in the world’s top 100. Of the top five city hotels in Mexico, three are in San Miguel de Allende, while the other two are in Mexico City.
The World’s Best survey was designed by Travel + Leisure and the research firm M&RR, and asked readers to rate cities, islands and various travel services in an online questionnaire. Before publishing the results, the magazine screens for and eliminates false responses.

“Favorite chili will probably have to be Chilhuacle.
Chilhuacle is one of the rarest chiles in Mexico. There are 3 varieties: Negro, Rojo, and Amarillo. We use the beautiful orange-yellow chile at the restaurant to make mole amarillito; it has a medium heat and is full of flavor. Chilhuacle amarillo is usually reserved for special occasions.
The rojo, like the rest of chilhuacles, comes from Mexico’s Cañada Valley in Oaxaca. This chile is medium-hot to taste and deep red in color, perfect for red moles and has hints of dry cherries and anise. Not traditional, but this chile also makes an amazing paprika once ground.
The negro variety has strong notes of cocoa, tobacco and dry fruit. Moderately hot, this chile is the cornerstone of authentic Oaxacan mole negro.
The Cañada valley in Oaxaca is a designated UNESCO ecological zone. Chilhuacle means ‘ancient chile’ in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztec people spoken throughout the region a half-century ago.
All chilhuacles are ancient chiles that are slowly falling out of favor and are slowly disappearing due to their high production costs. We have to go to the source and get them first hand (which is coming up in a few weeks) in order to offer [them] to our guests.”

Oaxaca in Wine Country brings Mexican state’s music, dance to Santa Rosa

Oaxaca in Wine Country brings Mexican state’s music, dance to Santa Rosa

Cracking bullwhips loudly and wearing ghoulish masks topped with horns, a dozen men danced under a hot sun Sunday in Santa Rosa’s Old Courthouse Square, celebrating the culture of Oaxaca, a Mexican state with a strong presence in Sonoma County.
One of the dancers, Jesus Soriano of Napa, said the dance represents “the joys of a tradition that comes from Oaxaca,” speaking through a translator, his wife, Yuliana Rojas.
Soriano wore of black and white paisley jacket, chaps covered in flowing goat hair and a handmade wooden mask of a scowling devil with enormous, curled ram’s horns.
The dance, performed by a Napa-based troupe called Los Diablos de Oaxacalifornia, “means the devils are trying to show their elegance,” he said, admitting the day was devilishly hot.
The eighth annual Oaxaca in the Wine Country event drew several hundred people to the square for a daylong display of food, artwork, crafts, dance and music from the place many in the crowd called their origin.
No one was able to say how many Oaxacans live in Sonoma County, but Carlos Chavez, president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Sonoma County, said “tons of friends” from Oaxaca were there.
“People who have moved here are bringing their culture to share with Sonoma County,” he said. “I think it enriches the lives of all of us — Anglos and Latinos — to see this.”
Lorena Ortiz, at a booth representing a Petaluma auto dealer, said she emigrated from Oaxaca in 1987 not speaking a word of English.
“Look at me now,” she said. “I’m selling vehicles.”
A U.S. citizen and a single mother of three, Ortiz said she followed her father, who left the Oaxacan village of Tejas de Morelos about a decade before her and landed in Petaluma because it was the last stop for his bus.
More than 1,000 people from that village live in Sonoma County, she said.
“Oh my God, it’s the culture, the loving people” she said, when asked what the event means. “We’re always helping each other without thinking of getting anything back.”
Eleven women and four small girls, twirling bright-colored skirts and holding decorated straw baskets on their heads, performed a traditional Oaxacan dance in a troupe from Santa Cruz called Centeotl Danza y Baile.
One of the dancers, Silvia Fernandez, a single mother of two, hails from Mexico City, where she performed for 10 years.
Some Oaxacans are especially proud of mezcal, claiming their state as the origin of the alcoholic beverage “considered the godfather of tequila,” said Julia Nolasco, a sales representative for her family’s mezcal company.
Spanish conquistadors brought distillation to the new world and applied it to agave, creating mezcal, she said.
“I like it — a lot,” said Enrique Lopez, a Oaxacan from Petaluma, lingering at the mezcal tasting booth.
“If you don’t have a bottle, you’re not Oaxacan,” added Marvin Carreno of Rohnert Park.
