A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Official recognition for new turtle species in Puerto Vallarta

Vallarta mud turtle was first discovered 20 years ago

A small mud turtle first discovered by residents of Puerto Vallarta 20 years ago was recognized as a new species last month, but now it is also considered one of the most threatened freshwater turtle species in the world.
The distinct looking turtle became known in the Jalisco city as casquito de Vallarta, or little Vallarta helmet, due to the shape of its shell.
Residents alerted experts some 20 years ago about the find, but they decided they were nothing more than juvenile specimens of another species.
But five years ago they gave another look at the diminutive turtle, the results of which were published on May 16 in a study entitled A Distinctive New Species of Mud Turtle from Western México in the journal Chelonian Conservation and Biology.
Studies performed on nine turtle specimens, five of them dead, led by a team of scientists from research institutions in the states of Tabasco, Jalisco, Mexico City, Guanajuato and Veracruz found that the turtle indeed belonged to a new species, Kinosternon vogti.
The Vallarta mud turtle, the largest specimens of which are 10 centimeters long, has only been found in a few human-created or human-affected habitats such as small streams and ponds found only around the resort town of Puerto Vallarta. All of the mud turtle’s currently known habitats have been damaged by urban growth.
Of the four known living specimens only one is a female. It was sent along with a male to a reproduction center in Tabasco, while the two other males remain in Puerto Vallarta.
The five turtles found dead have been deposited in a collection at the National Autonomous University of México, where they will be subject to further studies.
The Chelonian Conservation and Biology paper said “an urgent conservation program is necessary as well as explorations in the area to find viable populations of the species.”
The name of the new turtle species pays homage to Richard Vogt, a herpetologist and turtle conservationist who has studied the reptile for 40 years.

Transport around Puerto Angel
Hi
We're staying in Puerto Angel for a few days in early November and would like to explore the coast and surrounding area. We'd definitely like to visit Mazunte and Zipolite but I think it would also be nice to take a day trip to Puerto Escondido.
What I'd like to know is how easy it is to navigate this area using the camionetas and colectivos? A bit of googling has revealed that from Puerto Angel the camionetas run up to Pochutla rather than west along the coast, so we'd have to change there to get to Mazunte etc. Any advice as to how well served Puerto Angel is by the colectivos would be really helpful.
Thanks!

1. Re: Transport around Puerto Angel
Colectivos run between P.A. and La Ventanilla including Zipolite, San Agustinillo and Mazunte on the lower road (175). You can take one to San Agustinillo and walk 10 minutes to Mazunte. You might find it's a few short rides with different drivers. Easiest to Puerto Escondido is colectivo to Pochutla and jump on the bus for the main road (200). You can also have a taxi give you a colectivo rate and pick up other fares along the way. Colectivos are not the combis or vans of the east coast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heI2iypyJuI

On the heels of Aletta, the first hurricane of the East Pacific hurricane season, Hurricane Bud has developed and will threaten western Mexico with flooding rainfall this week.
Aletta began as a tropical depression south of Mexico on Tuesday night before quickly reaching hurricane status early Thursday afternoon. By early Friday morning, Aletta rapidly strengthened to a major hurricane, reaching Category 4 hurricane status only a few hours later.
However, Aletta quickly dropped back to tropical storm status on Saturday.
Aletta will continue to track west-northwest, well south of the Mexico coastline as it dissipates through the beginning of the week.
As threats from Aletta diminish, Bud will bring a new round of threats this week.
BudNew 6.10

Bud is expected to move northwestward into Wednesday as it strengthens, tracking closer to the Mexico coastline than Aletta.
Damaging winds and widespread flash flooding are not expected from Bud through Monday; however, more widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected from Oaxaca to Jalisco.
Some localized incidents of flash flooding are possible, but most locations will notice only an uptick in rainfall.
Coastal areas from Jalisco to Guerrero could have additional bouts of heavy rain and thunderstorms as Bud nears the coast during the middle of the week.
Communities such as Manzanillo, Tecomán and Colola will have to remain on alert for flash flooding through at least Wednesday. Small rivers and streams may quickly rise out of their banks and turn into deadly torrents.
Rough seas and dangerous rip currents will once again threaten beaches from Acapulco to Mazatlan, as well as southern Baja California, even though the storm remains far from these areas.
Boaters and bathers should use extreme caution and heed all small craft and beach advisories as they are issued.
If caught in a rip current, it is best to swim parallel to shore until free of its influence.
"Bud is likely to strengthen as we go through the early part of the week as it travels over the same warm waters that Aletta just went through," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Courtney Spamer.
However, the track of the storm is not expected to be the same as Aletta.
"Instead of curving westward, Bud could continue its northward track toward the Baja Peninsula of Mexico. Although weakening would be likely, this track could send tropical moisture into the southwestern United States late this week," Spamer added.
SWDownpours 6.10

Such moisture would be beneficial to drought-stricken areas of the southwestern United States, but could also create flash flooding issues if there is too much rain too quickly.
AccuWeather meteorologists anticipate that the East Pacific basin will remain active this season with an above-normal number of tropical cyclones forecast.
