A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Quakes caused spike in activity at El Popo

Tectonic earthquakes soared 558% at central Mexico volcano

The September earthquakes shook things up at El Popo with the result that 2017 saw the largest number of volcano tectonic earthquakes ever recorded at the active volcano in central Mexico.
Compared to the data from the previous 23 years, 2017 saw a whopping 558% increase in the number of such movements.
On September 7, an 8.2-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter 630 kilometers from Popocatépetl, the volcano’s full name, rocked southeastern Mexico. Later that month, on September 19, a 7.1 earthquake hit central Mexico; its epicenter was located just 73 kilometers from the volcano.
The surge in the volcano’s activity has been directly attributed to the massive September earthquakes, leading to an increase in the pressure within Don Goyo, as the volcano is called by the residents living in its vicinity.
But just as the volcanic activity increased, so did the release of the pressure through explosions and emissions, said Carlos Valdés González, head of the National Center for Disaster Prevention.
Despite the increase in volcanic activity, El Popo’s volcanic alert remains at yellow, phase 2.
Valdés recalled that in 2000 the activity was intense enough to warrant the preventive evacuation of over 41,000 people.
That year, a series of volcanic earthquake swarms were recorded on December 6 and again two days later, releasing during that short period of time the same amount of energy that it released during all of 1997.
The Popocatépetl volcano rises 5,452 meters above sea level and marks the middle of the trans-Mexican volcanic belt. El Popo is one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico, and given its location, the one that presents the largest risk.
It lies just 60 kilometers from Mexico City, 50 from the city of Tlaxcala and a mere 30 from the capital of Puebla. Over 23 million people live within a 100-kilometer radius of the volcano, and all are at some level of risk given its continuous activity.
A yellow, phase 2 alert means that the release of water vapor and gas plumes is to be expected, as is the light fall of ash in nearby areas along with incandescent fragments.
The alert level also warns of the possibility of eruptions causing pyroclastic flows and mudslides carrying debris, although at such a small scale that evacuation of neighboring inhabited areas is not required.
A security perimeter is enforced in a 12-kilometer radius of the crater, and traffic is controlled at Paso de Cortés, between the towns of Santiago Xalitzintla y San Pedro Nexapa, while local and regional Civil Protection offices remain ready to enact preventive procedures.

Looking between 3 hotels on Zipolite beach for Jan 2019. Do the hotels book out that far, or are they all booked up? When I look that far out, it says that they are currently unavailable at this time. I've never been to this area, so I'm not sure if I need to find something to reserve this far in advance.
I am looking at Hotel Noga
El Aquamista
Estrella de mar
Thanks in advance

Delta Air Lines canceled my flight, so where is my refund?

David Grogan thinks he’s on the first leg of a flight to Oaxaca, Mexico, with visions of kicking back and drinking margaritas poolside at his hotel. Then his Delta Air Lines flight is canceled and he’s unable to make any other flights. Can our advocates get him a refund?
Question
I booked a trip through Priceline last June for a Delta Air Lines flight from Baltimore to Detroit and then a connecting flight on Aeroméxico to Oaxaca via Mexico City. Then Delta canceled my flight and I couldn’t make the other flights.
When I tried to get the $357 charge on my credit card refunded, I got the runaround. Delta claimed Aeroméxico had my money; Aeroméxico said Delta had my funds. Priceline said it was the airlines’ responsibility.
Everybody pointed fingers and I just gave up. Until now. I hope you can take my case and straighten this out. David Grogan, Monkton, Md.
Answer
Sorry for your troubles, David, but your first contact should have been with Priceline. The rule of thumb is when you book a flight through a travel booking site, such as Priceline, refund requests must be made through them, not the airlines.
By contacting Priceline initially, perhaps you could have avoided unnecessary aggravation with the airline customer service reps who blew you off. When you contacted Delta, it punted your request for a refund to Aeroméxico; when you contacted Aeroméxico, it punted back to Delta.
Apparently, neither airline rep pointed you in the proper direction. Or maybe they just didn’t care.
I can empathize with your ordeal. All of us have been there.
What about that email to Delta Air Lines?
However, you didn’t help your cause when you fired off that scathing email in September to a Delta Air Lines customer service rep who informed you Aeromexico had already processed your refund when it had not.
“I have never booked anything with a Mexican airline for this exact reason,” you wrote. “There is no one to contact there. You can’t speak with a human! I am absolutely furious that this issue is still in limbo. I will never use Delta again because this has been such a nightmare…thanks for nothing.”
Yikes!
David, this is not the way to persuade a customer service rep to help you get a refund after Delta canceled your flight. You are familiar with the old adage that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, aren’t you?
Try being a tad more polite the next time you encounter an airline customer service rep.
Can we help with a refund?
Fortunately for you, we have executive contacts at Priceline, Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico. Too bad you were not more familiar with our website.
You could have linked to our Priceline contact and avoided a lot of inconvenience.
We also have executive contacts at Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico Aeroméxico who could have assisted you.
Nevertheless, you eventually contacted our consumer advocate, Dwayne Coward, who suggested you send an email to Priceline and try to resolve the issue. When Priceline didn’t respond to your email within a week, you circled back to Coward, who contacted Priceline himself.
A satisfactory resolution
Priceline subsequently agreed to an 80 percent refund of your $357 airfare. You decided not to pursue the remaining 20 percent.
