A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Preparing for Christmas and New Year in Mexico

Published: Sunday, December 14, 2014
Mexico Christmas Flower
December is one of the busiest travel months of the year in Mexico, with no less than three major events taking place nationally, and dozens of regional events also taking place throughout the country. December 12 is Dia de Guadalupe: coupled with Easter, this date marks the most important religious event on Mexico’s calendar.
Posadas Navideñas lead up to Christmas, and the New Year festivities. For visitors to Mexico and service providers focused on delivering leisure experiences, the period between December 20th and January 6th is unquestionably the busiest time of year.
If you plan to take a leisure break in Mexico over Christmas and/or New Year, you’ll need to book early to get the best choice of hotels. As of December 15th, flight prices increase and flight seat availability becomes ever-scarce. Internal domestic flights also become sold-out on the run-up to Christmas, as do international flights out of Mexico—as Mexicans and foreign expatriates living here leave to holiday or visit their families abroad.  Build-in some extra time for your journey to and through the airport, as the seasonal swell in passenger numbers slows everything down.
Buses and bus stations also fill-up as Mexican families travel to be with their loved ones over the festive period.  Although you can usually show up and buy a bus ticket on the day you are traveling—and be assured of a seat on the next bus out—if you plan to travel over the Christmas period, we recommend you go to the bus station and buy your tickets in advance.
Mexico City tends to empty-out during the week between Christmas and New Year, as Mexicans leave the metropolis to holiday abroad, visit family in the provinces, or take a well-earned break at one of Mexico’s many beach resorts. If you want to see the capital without the rush of crowds and traffic, mark Christmas Week on your travel calendar (along with Easter Week, when the same is true).
If you’re planning to drive in Mexico over the Christmas period, be aware that roads out of Mexico City (to Cuernavaca, Puebla, Toluca and Queretaro) get jam-packed in the week leading up the Christmas, and roads leading back in to Mexico City can get jammed on any days between December 30th and January 6th as holiday makers return to work and school.

If you fancy travel destinations not only earthly but also a journey through time, Zipolite located in the state of Oaxaca, is the place where you mark him as one of your destinations on your itinerary. This place is a legendary nudist beach, hippie something, something crazy and a great adventure.
The story goes that around 70, Zipolite housed many hippies since in Mexico was the only nudist beach; his name means Zapotec Muertos Beach.
If in addition to the folklore that still has this place, we would like to describe the landscape of the beach we can say the following: its golden sand and blue green of its water, make it an excellent place to practice love and peace with nature and their inhabitants.
The surf here is pretty strong because it is open sea, if you are interested in historiasespeluznantes to tell the time of the fire, the locals have an interesting repertoire of what they have witnessed due to these currents.
Sightseeing in Zipolite
to visit near Zipolite there are other beaches like Mazunte where you can go to the Mexican Turtle Center;San Agustinillo, a beach that is divided into three sections and one can swim because it is protected by rocks that allow the waves are soft.
You can also visit Puerto Angel, but if yours is experiencing a naked beach and tan completita (o), ideally enjoy Zipolite, restaurants, hotels and bars trapped in time, because you can still listen to classic rock as Santana, The Doors, Led Zeppelin and of course who puts the atmosphere of sun, sea and something else, Bob Marley.

Zipolite 13. DECEMBER 2014 ~ KIRSTEN KAMINSKI

Zipolite

IMG_2932
Zipolite – a tiny tiny village at the Pacific Coast in between Puerto Angel and San Agustín. In fact I don’t remember why we chose to make a stop exactly there on our way to Yucatan, but for some reason we did. It was my first time visiting the Pacific side of México and I must say, the first impression was quite positive. The second not so much…
The taxi ride from Pochutla to Zipolite was one of a kind. Somehow we managed to find the most amazing taxi driver in town, who had a deep affection for Reggae music (not so common in a Mexican no name village). Three girls packed together on the back seats of a cab full of Mexican kitsch, listening to some good Bob Marley beats, while Carlos (probably his name) passionately tried to get the lyrics right with his adorable Mexican accent and somehow achieved to manage the bumpy road…
Unfortunately, we forgot to take a video but just enjoyed the moment :-).
Playa de Zipolite
The initial plan was to stay for 2 days and then continue the journey towards San Augustín direction Puerto Escondido. We checked in at the highly recommended hostel Posada Brisa Marina, where the owner (an old American grandpa who spends half of the year in the States and the other half at his hostel) welcomed us with open arms and a joint :-).
CIMG0129
However, we didn’t take into account the Hurricane season, which is basically IMG_2934all summer long. Whereas on the day of arrival, we enjoyed an amazing atmosphere of relaxing in hammocks and sipping fresh coconut water while watching the beautiful sunset, the next couple of days weren’t pleasant at all. After a stormy night we woke up to a destroyed beach, which couldn’t be entered anymore due to the huge amounts of wood and trash that had been washed up over night. In addition to this, the only road connecting Zipolite with any other civilised area was blocked by trees, which made it impossible for us to leave or continue our journey.
IMG_2954Thus, there was no other option than spending the time at the hostel, laying in the hammock all day, playing cards or getting drunk and stoned with the grandpa and waiting for the mess to be cleaned up. As far as I remember we chose to play cards and meanwhile got to know a nice Italian couple, which we met again later on Isla Holbox.
