A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

THE ALCHEMIST POSADA IN ZIPOLITE

THE ALCHEMIST POSADA IN ZIPOLITE

December 2, 2014

On our last visit to Mazunte , Oaxaca, we decided to visit Zipolite. It was a rainy day so we pretty much went there to eat the most recommended place in town: the inn The Alchemist.

The Alchemist's hotel but we just met the restaurant. Located at the opposite end of the nudist beach Love, is a perfect place to eat calmly or take shots oceanfront very quiet corner.

If there is one thing that never fails on the beaches of Oaxaca is to always eat well. Whether in simple or more elaborate Fondita sites Alchemist is no exception.

We ordered chicken fajitas with vegetables and tuna with balsamic (for proteins) and we left room for dessert: a chocolate cupcake that had face being baked in a can and it was delicious, I esponjosito outside and filled with chocolate liquid and warm.

Even better than the food is the experience of the site. Good music, good view and good vibes.

We join all those who recommend The Alchemist as the best restaurant in Zipolite.

Sitting at Denver International

Had a 5  hour wait in Denver for my flight to Houston.  Took a bus ride on the Denver transit to the closest mall.  Lots of sun shine.  Ate lunch.  Time passed quickly.

Next stop, Houston.  If plane lands on time I have 32 minutes to catch the flight to Mexico City.  I will stay the night at Hotel Marlowe.

Catch flight Sunday to Guatemala City just after 1pm.  I will get to sleep in a little.  That will be nice.

I worked most of the day Friday.  Packed.  Slept from 11:30pm to 1am.  Drove to Spokane.  Maybe slept a couple of winks on flight from Spokane to Denver ... but not much.

See ya.

ivan

I am sitting in the GEG Spokane Airport. Flight starts boarding in 24 minutes (5am) for Denver. 4 hour wait in Denver. Good morning, all. :) ivan

Casa Orquidea Zipolite Rental HomeCasa Orquidea Zipoltie is a beautiful, large (1600 square feet, 150 square meters)and private new rental home overlooking Zipolite town and beach with a spectacular sunset view from all rooms of the house, outdoor patios and garden. It has two spacious bedrooms on the second floor with ceiling fans and French doors with screens opening up to a large porch with a table and chairs and ample space for hammocks. It can comfortably sleep six guests, with more in hammocks or our sofabed, eight guest limit please. It has one and a half bathrooms with an outdoor shower, with both hot and cold water. We have a large, fully stocked kitchen with all the modern appliances one could need with a long bar/counter and chairs to lounge and/or eat inside at the bar. We also offer our guests Sky TV, with many channels and a variety of languages to choose from.

The house is tiled with beautiful rustic Oaxacan red clay tiles and adorned with various pieces of handmade traditional art from our travels around Latin America, and of course, Oaxaca. There are big tiled patios upstairs and downstairs with a lush tropical garden and outdoor space to enjoy the cooling breeze and view of the town and ocean below. If you have children, our house has a crib, highchair, swing, baby gate (for the stairs) and even an outdoor plastic play structure! It is the perfect family getaway, with two couches that fold out to create additional beds, overhead fans in every room, hooks for hammocks inside and out, SKY TV, cleaning service, laundry, and has private access and parking for 2 vehicles as well.

It is an hour and a half away by car or bus from Bahias de Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, other popular and beautiful beach destinations here on Oaxaca’s Emerald Coast. After Odile… November 25, 2014 by admin

After Odile…

After Odile
On September 14th, just before midnight, Hurricane Odile made landfall at the tip of Baja Sur, in the Los Cabos region. It then proceeded to traipse up the Baja peninsula. It has been logged as the most intense hurricane to ever make landfall in Baja.
As I have said to many of my friends, life in La Paz has been segmented into life BEFORE the hurricane, and life AFTER the hurricane. What occurred before Odile came roaring through lies in the distant past.
And so here I am back at the helm of Prestige Property Group, after the hurricane. What went before is ancient history. I thought I was going to retire, and sit atop the hill in Haciendas Palo Verde and write my memoirs. Things change, and smart people adapt and grow with the change. It isn’t always easy.
After the hurricane, when it was safe to poke our heads outside and survey the damage, we were shocked. We wondered if La Paz could recover by the peak of high season in January. We wondered if the Los Cabos airport would ever re-open. With grit and determination, our beautiful city of La Paz has bounced back. There is work to be done, but we are up and running. With a gargantuan effort the Los Cabos airport is open. Our precious tourists are arriving daily.
After the hurricane, my Beloved and I stood in line waiting for our chance to shop in Chedraui. We watched many people exit, but no one was being allowed in. Then a young woman employee came out accompanied by a police officer and announced that they would be closing for two hours while they re-stocked. No one yelled abusive words, no one tried to push their way in. We, as a group, shrugged, said, “gracias,” and left. I did not expect any different reaction from my neighbors. But, I was still so proud of the civility of La Paz. We saw lines of hot, tired people waiting for ice, for gas, and to get into a store. No one groused, pushed, shoved; they waited patiently.
I have lived here for fourteen years, and there have been times when I was frustrated almost beyond endurance. There have been many more times when the graciousness and consideration of strangers has touched me. Never have I been more proud to say that I was a Paceana than during these weeks after the hurricane.
We have all been changed by the fierceness of this storm, the devastation, the loss. We have survived and will continue to come back strong and healthy.
So dear sellers and buyers, Prestige Property Group is still here to serve you. I am honored by all of you, my sellers that have put your faith in me to sell your homes. And I am grateful for you, the buyers that helped sellers move on to their next adventure. We are here to help you with your new Mexican adventure. Our website is new and refreshed. Our marketing online, in print, and in social media continues. We have buyers on the way, and many more talking to us online in preparation for their trip to La Paz.
After the hurricane, even though their homes and businesses were flooded and had damage, many of my colleagues brought water and food to those affected the most by a natural disaster, the poor. Never have I been more proud to be part of an organization like AMPI/MLS, then I am today.
Odile, the Black Swan, may have knocked us to our knees. We were never down for the count, and we are back, doing business, and welcoming visitors to our beautiful city.

My Spanish Notes El Caló Mexicano, Parte 2

My Spanish Notes

Posted: 23 Nov 2014 12:45 PM PST
Not too terribly long ago I wrote about El Caló Mexicano, or Mexican slang.  Rather than write yet another top 10 list, I decided to write about some very common Mexican slang that your average gringo probably isn't aware of.  Today I'm going to fulfill the promise I made about writing a part two.

Let's cover a few greetings first.

You've probably heard of the expression Qué onda, which means what's up, but here's a couple that might have escaped you.

¿Qué tranza?

¿Qué show?

¿Qué pex?

I don't know that any of these have a direct translation, they're just additional ways to say what's up.  These are very slangy and will most likely shock your Mexican friends when they hear you say this.

¡Que oso!

Literally speaking, this means what a bear.  But if you're not having a conversation about bears then this means how embarrassing.

That's embarrassing.  I don't know you.

We know these as a Volkswagon.  But in Mexican Spanish you'll probably hear it referred to as a vocho.

You'll hear people talk about dinero (money) all the time, but they may be doing it with words you aren't familiar with.  Feria andvaro.

No traigo varo wey
I don't have any money dude

Prestame una feria wey
Loan me some money dude

While not uniquely Mexican, there are other ways to talk about money.  I blogged about this a while back - Más minutos menos lana.

Let's keep going.

In standard Spanish to say you don't like someone you can use caer bien or caer mal.  But in Mexican Spanish you say....

Ese wey me cae gordo
I don't like that guy

If you really like someone then you can say...

Tu amiga me cae a todo madre
I really like your friend

And keep in mind with the expression caer bien we're talking about if you like someone, not if you like like them.  For that you need gustar.

If you find yourself flipping a coin, you can say Águila o sol - Heads or tails

Here's a good one.  The next time someone asks you cómo van las cosas (How are things going), you can reply....

Atole con lo mismo
The same as always

And finally, when your friends ask how you know all of this , you can tell them...

Porque soy más mexicano que el chile
Because I'm more Mexican than the chile

And that's it for today.  Make sure you subscribe via email or follow the blog and keep reading for more Mexican slang and other great posts!

Hello. Regarding hotels, I can not say precisely. I have been passing these places. but if you google maps you put some hotels and comments from those who have stayed in these places ... not an expensive area. so I assure you find easily any with the budget that you request. As for the booths, depending on the route you take ... the most viable routes are VIA ACAPULCO AND VIA PUEBLA-OAXACA. I commented that to make the choice via puebla-oaxaca, you spend it stands in approx. Auto 350 pesos. if you need more detailed information write to me at my email. jogarc19@yahoo.com.mx

Happy Thanksgiving! :)
