A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Cinco de Mayo Isn’t a Big Deal in Mexico MAY 5 Posted by TC

Cinco de Mayo Isn’t a Big Deal in Mexico

Like St. Patrick’s Day, which is irrelevant in Ireland, Cinco de Mayo is an excuse for Americans to get drunk.
drinkin
I have no problem with that. Just don’t put the lime into the Corona bottle. Squeeze it in and then throw the rind away. Yes Mexicans love lime in beer, but you’ll never see one stick it into the bottle.
Although they do enjoy micheladas, bizarre mixtures of beer, tomato juice, hot sauce, and lime – like a beer Bloody Mary. And like for Bloody Marys, you can find wild ones – fruit flavored, extra spicy, black with bitter British sauce. I even got good ones in Mexico City that had shrimp.
So what is Cinco de Mayo? I don’t know, some battle or something, definitely not Mexican Independence Day. Mexican Independence day is celebrated on September 16, and that’s a party.
If you really want to know about Cinco de Mayo, look at Wikipedia. I mean, I could do it and rewrite the info here, pretending like I actually remembered, but why?
I do have the day off, though only because I work at a public university and they are generous with the vacation days. Almost everyone had last Thursday off, because it was Worker’s Day. So, rather than Monday, a lot of people got Friday to make a 4-day weekend.
Regardless of its relevance, if Cinco de Mayo means you’re going to party, I’ve got some suggestions:
If you want to drink Mexican style but not tequila shots, which can be a little strong, and not Margaritas, which aren’t really Mexican, you can try a Paloma:

Paloma

Ice
1/3 tequila
2/3 squirt
One key lime (ping-pong ball size), squeezed in
Salt on the rim (before you put in the ice, get the rim wet and dip it in a dish of salt)

Some of the better, affordable tequilas:

Milagro
1800
Patron
Centenario
Cheaper but acceptable:
El Jimador
Cazadores
and of course Jose Cuervo, which is fine
There are three grades of tequila:
Añejo – the oldest, darkest, and best
Reposado – your common, light brown tequila
Blanco – totally clear, can be very tasty
tequila distillery
Or you can make Aguas Locas. I have my own version:

Aguas Locas (de lujo)

Ice
1/3 dark rum (look for Flor de Caña, a good Nicaraguan rum)
A good splash of Malibu rum
2/3 Orange “water”
aguas locas
In Mexico, aguas de sabores (flavored waters), usually just called aguas, are basically diluted juice.
For orange, squeeze 4-6 fresh oranges and then put in twice as much water, a few spoons of sugar (to taste), and a little salt.
You can do it with lime too. (Adding more salt creates a homemade Gatorade, by the way.)
Enjoy! If you want to drink beer, yes Corona is good, but for a better lager, try Bohemia. For dark beer, look for Negra Modelo or Victoria.
And remember, if you are interested in Mexican culture, come visit Mexico. Eating tacos, doing tequila shooters, and wearing funny hats on a hyped-up holiday doesn’t count.

In the Good Seats

Q. Which airlines have the best seats (more comfy, more leg room) and which airlines have the least comfy seats? When is it worth it to pay for the extra leg room? And how much more should you pay?

A. There can be a vast difference in legroom (or knee room really). Some Spirit Airlines planes have just 28 inches between rows whereas JetBlue planes have at least 33 inches between rows, without paying extra.

However, seat width remains the same unless you upgrade to business or first class. And for many people, seat width is even more important than legroom.

If you’re tall, it probably is worth it to splurge for extra room on longer flights. If you’re 5 feet 9 or under, maybe not. And if you’re wide then it may pay to upgrade to business or first. What’s surprising to me is that if you’re willing to buy a non-refundable business or first class fare, it won’t cost that much more on some routes. It used to cost 5 or 10 times more to fly in first vs. economy, but now you might only pay double if you’re willing to buy a non-refundable fare. As in the example below, for LA to Chicago there are $380 and $409 one-way fares on some flights and $717 for first class.
Also, airlines are offering last-minute upgrades for very little compared to the original purchase price. I was offered a $350 upgrade to business class on a LA-NY flight from my original $189 economy fare recently. Had I paid in advance, that business class seat would cost $2500.  So always ask if there are last minute paid upgrades. And of course, it’s always a good value to use your miles to upgrade. 15,000 miles one way to upgrade to a $2500 seat is a bargain relative to using miles for a cheap economy class seat.

We also see last minute upgrade offers from regular economy to “economy plus” (as United calls it), main cabin extra (as American calls it) and “economy comfort” (as Delta calls it). Fees vary depending on route and airline. These seats also include priority boarding.

Before you fly, it's always a good idea to check out your airline's seat sitch on SeatGuru.com.

Meditation Ambient Sound (Birds Singing and Frogs Croaking in British Columbia)

Published on Apr 27, 2014
I'm sorry this week's video is a little late.... I've been on vacation for the last week in British Columbia. While I was there I took some 2700 photographs, and some 25 hours of recording the sounds of frogs at night and birds around dawn. This is a sampling from that, along with some of the pictures I took (daffodils, bluebells, rainforest, huge trees, trilliums). The pace of the photos is quite slow, to help bring about an atmosphere of meditation and peace.

WONDERFUL OAXACA APRIL 26, 2014

WONDERFUL OAXACA

Arriving in Oaxaca – a 14 hour drive from Puebla – stunned my senses. Like any road travel in Mexico, looking out of the window is not for the faint-hearted, but after about nine hours of restless dozing and admiring the inside of the minibus, curiosity got the better of me. I’m familiar with a variety of beautiful European landscapes, but I’d never been anywhere truly tropical before, so weaving our windy way through the mountains was definitely an eye-opener – and a real treat. Everything was just so huge, and our mini bus so tiny in comparison, that it really gave a sense of nature at its wildest and most impressive. The vertical drop just inches from the edge of the road was hundreds of metres of sheer terror, and every spot covered in thick, lush, greenery. There were mango trees everywhere, and piles of coconuts heaped along the roadside. On stepping out of the minibus the first thing I noticed wasn’t the heat but the sound of nature’s noisy hubbub. We had arrived in paradise.

Coconuts - mind your head!

Our first stop was Reserva Ecológica de Chacahua. We travelled for forty minutes by boat through a vast network of swampy rivers, the likes of which I’d only seen on documentaries about the Amazon. We were dropped off at a little riverside village and walked through to the idyllic beach complete with flawless sand stretching as far as the eye could see, and an abundance of palm trees and hammocks.

When we’d had our fill of sunshine and cerveza we headed off on the final leg of our journey to Puerto Escondido, where we were to station ourselves for the next few days. Expecting some kind of grotty hostel, we were extremely happy to find that our hotel was not only stationed right on the beachfront, but also had its own perfect little pool. VERY happy campers!

Next up was a trip to hippy hot-spot Mazunte. The beach was another stunner, and we indulged in some delicious Mexican-style seaside grub. In the evening we took the twenty minute walk up to Punta Cometa to watch the sunset from the cliff top. With the waves crashing and splashing beneath us we watched in awe as the sky glowed a hundred spectacular shades of red before darkening into nightfall.

A magical moment

The next day Juli and I were celebrating having been in Mexico for three months, and we did so by taking a horse ride along Puerto Escondido beach at sunset. My horse was called Calcetín, which means Sock. He was a real cutie!

Our next stop was Huatulco. Being the Easter holidays here, it was as busy as it could possibly have been, with all of the beach swallowed by crowded restaurants and cafés right up to about a metre from the water line. We ate classic Mexican nieve, which translates as snow and is like a creamy sorbet. The speciality flavour of Oaxaca is with grated carrot and coconut, and epitomises the taste of the tropics!
Huatulco

Then we went to the centre of Huatulco and planted ourselves on a café terrace overlooking the traditional dancers in the Zócalo and drank traditional Oaxacan hot chocolate, which I just couldn’t get enough of throughout the trip. It’s served in a bowl like soup and is made with either milk or water (milk is always my preference). It’s thick and creamy, and sweetly spiced with vanilla, cinnamon and almond. It’s not completely smooth because of the minimal processing and traditional stone-grounding method of breaking down the cocoa beans, but the texture just adds to its delicious rustic flavour.
As midnight approached we bade a fond farewell to Oaxaca and embarked on an overnight bus ride to Chiapas…
