A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Want to have a great (and cheap) time in Cancun without doing the all-inclusive thing?

Want to have a great (and cheap) time in Cancun without doing the all-inclusive thing?

Budget Travel in Cancun, Mexico?
You can smell the sea from the Cancun airport. No more stuffy airplane, no more boring job in your cold hometown. Welcome to paradise – the Mayan Riviera. Welcome to Cancun.
The Mayan Riviera is a 130 km stretch of Caribbean coastline in southeast Mexico. Between Cancún in the north and the Mayan ruins of Tulum in the south are countless white-sand beaches on the calm turquoise water of the Caribbean.
Cancun is famous for all-inclusive luxury resorts, while formerly lesser-known beach hangouts like Playa del Carmen are now firmly established on the beaten path. But a budget-conscious side remains to these world-class tourist destinations. You can still get a nice hotel room for under $30 USD in downtown Cancun, and eat the best – and cheapest – local food just a few blocks from the beach in Playa del Carmen.
The great Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, are only a few hours from Cancún on good highways. In the other direction, rocky Tulum rivals Chichén Itzá with its location on limestone cliffs overlooking the sky-blue Caribbean.
The Yucatan Peninsula
My Cancun and Mayan Riviera 5-Day Itinerary is for the independent traveler who likes the beach but also wants some culture. Besides saving a lot of money, you:
  • Have two full days on two gorgeous beaches: Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
  • Explore two Mayan ruins: Chichén Itzá, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, and Tulum, a sunny fortress built on cliffs overlooking one of the most iconic beaches in Mexico.
  • Dip your toe into Yucatán culture in Valladolid, a small colonial town in central Yucatán.
  • Swim, snorkel or scuba dive in the clear, freshwater Dos Ojos cenote.
  • Eat what Mexicans eat: seafood, tacos, and Yucatán specialties like panuchos and salbutes.
  • Shop, party, get tan, and learn some Spanish, history and culture. And, if time permits, venture farther into Mexico and Central America.
It’s cheap at $5 for 43 pages of solid information. (Actually it’s only 4.99.) You’ll save that much the first time you follow my advice on a bus, restaurant or cenote.
The Mayan Riviera is the most traveled part of Mexico. People go there for a beautiful time in a beautiful hotel, on a beautiful beach.
But I say: Skip the beautiful hotel! Of course hang out on the beautiful beach, but don’t miss the beautiful culture too.
This part of Mexico may be the most visited, but perhaps the least understood. I try to remedy this with my modest guide.

Most famous for Cancun, the Mayan Riviera is Mexico’s tourist fantasyland, a jungle coastline of white-sand beaches…

"¡Qué boquita!" No seas pelangoche.

"¡Qué boquita!" No seas pelangoche.

If you don't know, verga means dick or cock.  Take your pick, either way it's a vulgar way of referring to the male genitalia.

Me encanta la verga
I love dick

Dame tu verga papi
Give me your dick baby

The word verga is even more versatile than that.  There are a few expressions that use the word verga.

Vete a la verga
Fuck off / Go fuck yourself

Me vale verga
I don't give a fuck

And of course today's expression:

Atrevete a ser diferente, pero no te pases de verga
Dare to be different, but don't go fucking overboard

Notice his boots.  Those are called botas picudas, a trademark of musica tribal, which to my knowledge is primarily, if not only, a Mexican thing.

Let's talk about another word, vergazo.  What is a vergazo you ask?

The word vergazo also comes from verga, and has both a sexual and non-sexual meaning.  Let's start with the sexual meaning.

Oye chica linda, voy a darte un vergazo
Hey pretty girl, I'm going to dick-slap you

There it is, you now know how to tell someone you're going to dick-slap them in Spanish.  You should feel a sense of pride coming over you now.

A vergazo is also a really hard hit, like a serious knockout.   You can also use the expression "darte un vergazo" to tell someone you're about to kick their ass.

Vete a la verga puto o te voy a dar un vergazo wey, sigue de payaso
Fuck off faggot or I'm going to beat your fucking ass dude, keep acting like a clown

Let's look at some other ways to use vergazo.

¡Puta, que vergazo!
Fuck, what a fucking punch!

Although I translated vergazo as a punch, it can be any type of hit, like a car crash, or a big fall.  Any sort of high impact that makes you go daaaammmmn!

There are several other synonyms for vergazo, like coñazo, madrazo, golpazo, puñetazo, putazo and chingaso. All of them imply somebody got hit, but hard.  You may see them spelled with an s or z.  Which one is the correct spelling?  These are very informal words and in day-to-day speech nobody cares which version is correct, so forget about the little details and just have fun with these.

Lastly, here's a song called EL VERGAZO.  You're going to hear a lot of good stuff in this song and by good stuff I mean bad language.  You can read the lyrics here.

This type of song is called a porno corrido.  I don't think the porno part needs much explanation, so let me tell you what acorrido is.  Think of a corrido as ballad, a song that tells a story.  Aside from porno corridos there are narco corridos, which are songs about drug dealers and drug trafficking.  There are probably other types of corridos, but in this blog we're only concerned about the "interesting" ones.

Anyway, that's all for today!

Bell of Oaxaca

The Washington Post, August 21, 2013
Spirits
  • Course: Beverage
  • Features: Fast

Summary:

While a reposado tequila will do here, a good mezcal takes the flavor to a smokier level and works well with the veggie-centric nature of this savory drink. Using red bell pepper and tomato for a backbone and straining out the solids preserves the vibrant flavor and color of summer produce but eliminates the gloppy texture of some bloody marys.
Smoked salt is available at Whole Foods, Sur la Table and other stores. Chili-lime salt is available at H-Mart, Sur la Table, many Hispanic markets and some grocery stores.
2 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 lime
  • 1 large red bell pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 large red or gold tomato, seeded and coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 ounce simple syrup (see NOTE)
  • 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 thin crosswise slices jalapeno pepper (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon smoked salt or chili-lime salt, for garnish (see headnote)
  • Ice
  • Several thin slices unpeeled cucumber, for garnish
  • 3 ounces mezcal, such as Del Maguey's Vida
  • Fresh basil leaves, preferably purple basil, for garnish

Directions:

Squeeze the lime half to yield 1/2 ounce of juice; reserve the spent lime half.
Combine the bell pepper, tomato, lime juice, simple syrup, salt and jalapeno, if using, in a blender. Puree at high speed, then strain through a fine-mesh strainer, cheesecloth or jelly bag, reserving the juice and discarding the solids. The yield is 6 to 8 ounces.
Make a small heap of smoked salt or chili-lime salt on a plate. Rub the spent lime half around the rims of two chilled highball glasses, then roll the rims gently across the plated salt (you don't have to go all the way around, and it doesn't have to be neat). Fill the glasses two-thirds full with ice. Slip several slices of cucumber into each glass.
Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice, then add the strained juice and the mezcal. Shake briefly to chill, then divide between the glasses and garnish with basil.
NOTE: To make simple syrup, combine 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a slow, rolling boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 5 minutes. Transfer to a heatproof container and let cool to room temperature. It can be refrigerated, covered, for several months.
