A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

 Zipolite from La Crucecita
Question? is there a local bus that runs from La Crucecita to Zipolite? if not right to Zipolite what would be the best place to depart the bus, and at that point take a cab the remainder of the way! any idea of cost for the bus and the taxi the remaining distance to Zipolite? We do not speak any Spanish at all, would you think we would have a problem getting there in this manner? we are staying in Zipolite for a few days then returning to La Crucecita. Our travel dates would be Monday March 18 and returning Wednesday March 20!
Thanks for any advice

You could take the SUR bus and get off at the intersection for Pochutla and Puerto Angle, then take a cab to Zippo. The reverse on the way back, Sur runs about every hour during the day.
More folks here are speaking English so you should be fine. Just translate in advance the request for tickets to Pochutla for the bus station. Get the driver to stop and let you off at the lights just past the military checkpoint. There usually are taxis there ar will pass regularly.

My guess is a taxi all the way would be about 2500 pesos more than a bus for two. That's about $10 each. Certainly a lot easier for little extra.

We hired a taxi for the day, went to Puerto Angel, Zipolite, San Agustinillo, and Mazunte. We paid the driver $600 pesos and tip for a whole day. Zipolite is a cool place and fun to hang out for a while (no pun intended) but my all favorite is San Agustinillo. Great beach that has different parts, one is a long open beach, lots of surfers, and a nice semi-sheltered cove that was perfect for swimming and body surfing. If you have an image of a tropical beach getaway, this is it. I could have spent a few days chilling out there. Well worth the trip.
I think Alegre has one too many zeros.

You're right about both San Agustinillo and the zeros.
