A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

We loved this pizza so much we came back twice!

The female owner was our server and was helpful and kind.

She first brought us a complimentary bruschetta dish with a lovely sicillian sauce to top the delicious bread.

Pizza: she recommended the "family" size which is big enough for two instead of the single pizzas for endividial consumption.

We had half traditional margarita (with oreagon instead of basil) and ham and mushroom on the other half.

We enjoyed this perfectly prepared pizza! Sauce was just right and the cheese sprinkled perfectly! My mouth waters thinking about this!

The block that il postario sits on is a jewel for great food. There is a gourmet ice cream parlor, best sea food in PE, cafe for delicious breakfast, coffee shops to sip espresso and great little hotels to stay (villa Mozart) and the beach down the hill.

Loved staying in this neighborhood! We lucked out with the beauty of PE and gourmet foods of this block.

We took a break from mexican food at this nice restaurant at the commercial zone in rinconada. The owner and his wife are very friendly and funny people. You can eat handmade pasta or pizza’s here and finish your meal with desserts like profiteroles. The options are limited but then again: everything is made by hand. We tasted a pizza and a pasta, and really like them. His pizza’s have the best tomato sauce and the pasta’s are really savoury. We also saw locals and taxi drivers getting their pizza here for take away. I guess the options for Italian food in Puerto escondido are endless but we went twice to this place because we liked it so much…

El restaurante es muy bueno , la comida la hace una familia italiana que vive en PE y al probar la pizza o la pasta echa e. Casa son maravillosos , también a una cuadra puedes comer gelato echo ir un romano , y todos hasta le gente que pasaba era muy amable

Where have we been? Watching a LOT of Olympic events. We have not had cable television service since the 90’s (as in 1990’s). We were forced to have it with our Internet connection. For a 10 mb per second connection we bit the bullet. But, now we are getting 3-5 channels of live Olympic coverage from 4 AM to 3:30 in the afternoon (it may start earlier – 4 AM is early enough for us).

We got so excited we went out to look at BIG television sets. 32” upwards to 46” behemoths. Last time we had cable we had a huge projection style television. Now with HD and LED a new generation of quality is upon us.

As mentioned many times electronics are costlier here in Mexico – we looked anyway. While browsing around the electronics department at Chedraui Supermarket we spotted a cute Acer netbook on sale with 15% discount. Of course this was the last day of a three day sale – we had to make a decision now.

We wanted to replace Anita’s broken HP laptop. She has needed her own computer!

We checked the specifications; had them fire one up (you would think with 25 boxes of units and a splash sale that would have been happening – but no). We waited while a salesperson found five keys to open five separate locks protecting one glass display. Then find the cords etc. Finally a hands on test. We got more and more impressed and went for it.

Buying a new computer – the fun just begins. Loading bunches of software follows – often for days. We are on day two. Add to the complication that we replaced Windows Starter (in Spanish) with Windows 7 Home Premium (in English). We had to go on the Internet and find all the device drivers – quite a project.

The Calypso Conputer Lab

This little computer has a 10.1” screen. We connected it to a larger HP monitor. It also will play into our VIZIO HD television via an HDMI cable – playing 1081 HD quite well. A 320 GB hard drive, 2 GB RAM, card reader for my camera, 3- USB ports, VGA and HDMI video out, Ethernet, built-in camera and microphone – for less than $250 USD in Mexico – color us happy!

Today was a very good day for Mexico in Olympic terms. Before today we had two silver diving medals. Then today a bronze and a silver in the same women’s archery event – wow! To see two Mexican athletes on the three medalists podium made us proud.

It has been an easy fit to change our sports allegiance to Mexico. This occurred a few years back. Of course the power house U.S. has a bus load of medalists and medals already (Day Five); more than even China as we write this. Mexico has 4 medals and we are darn proud of our athletes! Stay Tuned!

My wife and I went to Zipolite in June and had to endure hurricane "Carlota", many of the hotels in the beach had a lot of damage, but this small hotel just behind the beach did not, in fact they took us in just two hours before the hurricane hit, because the other hotel we where staying started to flood.
Anyways, this is a very cheap place, but the owners (Don Omar and Gris) are wonderful people, the place is locked and looked after, something rare in Zipolite, so I do believe your stuff is safe, each room had a basic shower and full bath, again rare in Zipolite for the price, it even had TV and WiFi.
All in all I had a great time in this hotel and would recommend for anyone looking for a basic, cheap and very clean place to stay in Zipolite.

Scott Enochs and a friend traveled to Huatulco, Mexico for a week of surfing, drinking and fishing at a four-star, all-inclusive resort called Secrets.

"The resort was unbelievable, with ocean views from every room and terraced pools throughout," says Scott.

Scott says their personal driver, Roberto, took them to his home, where they were the guests of honor for the driver's son and daughter's First Communion. Roberto's wife made Chicken Mole with rice and tortillas and plenty of beer.

"They were dirt poor, which means they sweep the dirt to keep the floor clean, but they are very happy and so were we after a week of fun," says Scott.

Olympics 2012: Mexico outfits at Opening Ceremony #FAIL???

People tend to be patriotic during the Olympics.

The outfits the Mexican national team wore during the Opening Ceremony were widely criticized.

They were very colorful and used some of the traditional patterns worn by the indigenous of Mexico. But they were designed in bright neon pink, green and orange. They took traditional designs and symbols and made them modern.

They made the worst dressed lists of many and they were trashed on Twitter.

Personally, my first impression was that the outfits were fun. I don't think they made fun of Mexican culture but they tried to celebrate it. They do border on tacky but they got the team noticed.

They certainly weren't worse than Germany's pink and blue jackets or the U.K. team's golden collars that reminded me of the FTD flower symbol.

Anyway, it's not about fashion but sports.

Men's Olympic Soccer 2012: Mexico vs. Gabon Recap; Dos Santos Propels Mexico to 2-0 Win

Mexico brought themselves one step closer to the semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Gabon Sunday.

The catalyst for their victory was superstar Giovanni Dos Santos who started the match on the bench.

The opening 45 minutes were equal as both teams traded opportunities at the end. Gabon exerted their physical style to create their chances while El Tri used their skill to create their own. Mexico controlled possession but Gabon looked dangerous with their speed on the counterattack.

At the start of the second half, Dos Santos finally made his appearance; twenty minutes before he had come on the pitch in the first match against Korea. As in the Korea match, he made a huge difference. Mexico immediately looked more aggressive and Gabon started to sit back and attempt to minimize the superstar's space. But it made no difference.

In the 63^rd minute, Dos Santos took an Oribe Peralta feed and gave Mexico a 1-0 lead. Gabon rallied with a plethora of opportunities but did not capitalize. In waning moments, Henry Ndong received a second yellow card for roughing Peralta in the penalty area. Dos Santos used the subsequent penalty kick to double his team's score and secure their victory.

The win gives Mexico four points and ties them with Korea for the group lead. A tie puts them through to the quarter-finals and a win gives them the top spot in the group. A loss could put them in jeopardy of elimination however. Gabon must win against Korea by three goals and hope for a Mexican win or draw to ensure passage.
