A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

 Visit La Ventanilla Community Cooperative
When you visit Mazunte be sure to visit La Ventanilla only 2km north of MAzunte. They have a community project to protect turtle that you can witness with a daily baby turtle release. They take visitors to see the crocodiles in the lagoon. Here again you will not be disappointed. The crocs came VERY close to the boat. The cooperative has also just built several cabanas near the beach and have an excellent community run restaurant. Be sure to use cooperative run tours and restaurant as some hanger ons have open up around the beach.
My wife and I really enjoyed the 3 to 4 hour horse back ride on the beach , 35usd each. We galloped at sunset and I had not been on a horse since I was 12 years old! We also rode the horses into a croc free lagoon where the horses swam. Magical!

 Turtle Tours
A very popular activity but very ILLEGAL are the swimming with turtle tours that are offered from touts on the beach. These should be avoided as marine turtles are endangered species that are making a very difficult comeback.
On the tours a person jumps in the water and grabs a marine turtle for the boat customers to play with. What people don't know is that human contact transfers diseases to the turtles and most importantly the tourists drown the turtles. Turtles often have no time to catch their breath and start to go down underwater to avoid human contact. They then stay at the bottom waiting for the boat to leave and die.
It is very illegal to touch and play with turtles. Try to respect the law and protect the very species you have come to visit. A very good alternative to Turtle tours can be found at La Ventanilla only 2 kms north of MAzunte. Here the community runs a conservation project where baby turtle hatchlings are released back to the ocean everyday in season around 5pm. You can visit also their Crocodile sancturary for only 4usd. They also offer horseback riding at sunset on their 25km long beach. Visit La Ventanilla it's a hundred times better than anything the touts offer on the beaches of MAzunte or Zipolote beaches.

 which place (beach) to chose?
Hi!
we are planning to travel around Oaxaca state and then to Yucatan by car at the end of april.
We plan to spend 2 nights - 3 days on the beach. we are chosing between Mazunte, San AgustinilloZipolitePuerto AngelHuatulco...
we would like to choose the most beautifull beach, where we can swim (cause we dont surf) and buggyboard if possible, we are not looking for the place with planty big hotels, bars and restaurant (as cancun because we will go there later) but several bars restaurants on the beach is a plus :)
Guys who have been in these places - which is your favorite? which do u like more and why?

My son and daughter-in-law swear that Mazunte is the best. They recommend Pasada Arigular (maybe not the exact spelling)

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Vancouver
Look at Hualtulco forum page at "What's west of the airport". The beach at Zipolite is famous for its dangerous riptides. San Agustinillo and Mazunte have safer beaches. I like San Agustinillo best for the long beach (deserted at one end) and the restaurants/hotels, but S.A. and Mazunte are only 10 minutes apart by foot. They are separated by a rocky stretch so you walk the road. The hotels to investigate are Un Sueno which is rustic with no hot water and Punta Placer which is next door and quite lovely. Both are very neat places to stay, just different. Zipolite is definately worth a quick taxi ride for a day visit.

4. Re: which place (beach) to chose?
I suggest Cabanas Punta Placer as a great place to stay in St. Agustinillo. We just returned from Oaxaca and stayed at Punta Placer for about six nights and it was wonderful. Unfortunately, we did stay at Un Sueno per suggestion from a person on the travel forum but when we arrived at 9 PM from San Francisco, we were not able to go to our palapa because there was no one to show us our room. And the real downside of the place was that there was very low water pressure which meant that the toilet took forever to fill up after using it. Perhaps it was just the room we stayed in but it was surprising to have a problem with such a basic thing. We had to turn on the water with an wrench and wait until the tank filled. Then had to be there to shut the water off. The room was fine but compared to Punta Placer, my vote goes to them. There is a restaurant and very attentive people like Claire. She is an angel and she was very helpful in arranging a taxi to and from the airport. Also I recommend going to Oaxaca City to a few days. The food and charm of that city is worth the time to explore. For more details please email me. I requested a palapa on the beach.

Puerto Escondido – surf, drugs and enchiladas chili con carne June 7, 2012 by jofranciszek

Puerto Escondido – surf, drugs and enchiladas chili con carne

Puerto Escondido
We decided to take a minibus from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido. If you do the same be prepared for an adveture…
on the way to Puerto EscondidoOn the way, first and only stop… I can’t believe we survived this ride… 7h of rollercoaster is too much even for me… it’s hard to describe but imagine narrow, mountain road (where 2 cars can bearly pass each other) going up and down the mountain, no air conditioning or ventilation in the old smelly minibus (while it’s boiling hot outside) and a crazy driver who sits on the other cars back bumperall the time, I loved it for the first half and was sick the other half… well made it finnally… and when we did even those waiting to sell us stuff knew better than to try it.
There is also alternative route coach and it takes highways rather than small mountain roads. So you can try it. We flew back from Puerto Escondido (splendid, beautiful airport) to Mexico City so this is another route to take.
We wanted to go to Acapulco when we planned this trip but Fishing in Puerto Escondidoin the end decided against concrete hotels next to the beach and someone recommended us Puerto Escondido. It’s one of the most important tourist attractions on the Oaxacan coast. It caters to a more downscale and eclectic clientele than neighboring Huatulco, mostly surfers, backpackers and Mexican families. West from the town is a large lagoon area popular for fishing and birdwatching.
We loved our hostel having a room with ocean view. It was called Hotel and Youth Hostal Mayflower (Andador Libertad, Mayflower Hotel and Hostel, Puerto EscondidoOaxaca, Puerto Escondido 71980, Mexico). We could also see a night market in the street below. I think only here we got ourselves nice suveniers. Acctually I bought Maya Calendar earlier in Teotihuacan. I think I bargained it to an extent when the woman was unhappy about the price. I don’t think it’s ecologic attitude and I guess now I believe that both parties should feel happy about the price. When you can’t afford not to sell but at the same time price gives you no margin it just seems so unfair.Night market Puerto Escondido
There are many small and mid-sized hotels and restaurants around and a few upscale hotels to choose from. Most cuisine is based on seafood and local plants, which include eleven species of banana, chocolate and coffee. In one of those restaurants I ordered Enchiladas chili con carne. enchiladas chili con carneI didn’t speak Spanish much but after the time we spend in Mexico I was able to make decisions from the menu lol before ordering I spoke to the waiter and made sure that enchiladas where with beef and tomato chili sauce. What did I get… well dry chicken and black bean sauce hahahaha so yes, at the sea don’t be stupid like me and order sea food! Anyway when the waiter after the meal asked if I would like to go out in the evening to a disco I refused straight away I was so disappointed with the food. My thinking went along the lines “How dares he! Serves me this instead of what I wanted even though I’d made sure it was with beef and tomatos and than asks me to go out!” silly, silly girl I sometimes am.Live music
The beach is lovely and it’s famous among the surfers because of the waves. The sunsets are stunning. You can take a walk along the Andador Escéncico (Scenic Walkway) which is a set of paths, stairs and bridges that begin at the main beach of the town and wind their way over rocky oceanside cliffs, passing below the lighthouse to a lookout the named Sueño Posible (Possible Dream). In some places the walkway is very near the ocean and gets wet from the waves.
pelicansWe tried surfing, not really on surfing boards but on body boards. I managed to catch the wave only once but it was enough. Going with the flow gets a totally different meaning. No wonder surfers have something of a hippi style of life. You don’t want to loose what you feel in the water after getting out of it.
The pelican are like gulls you can see them everywhere around. Summing it up if you don’t like crowds of people, fancy hotels and do like surfing Puerto is for you :)
P.S. You might wonder what happened to the drugs… well i’ve never seen any drugs in Puerto Escondido, only after some time when I told somebody about my trip there I got to know it’s famous for drugs. So maybe it is. Be sure if you don’t want to find them you won’t. unless things change which they do lol

Huatulco, Oaxaca, Mexico – Alebrijes

Huatulco, Oaxaca, Mexico – Alebrijes

Trip to Huatulco – little bit of Mexican art … Alebrijes

When I arrived at my hotel room I was delighted to find a gift from the hotel and thought I would share it with you and a bit of the history of these mysterious ornaments.
The card with the ornament had this explanation …
These allegories of animals were invented by Pedro Linares Lopez from Oaxaca (pron. Wa-ha-ka), while he was 30, and very sick.  While unconscious, he dreamed of a strange and different place where all the animals had turned into odd, unknown creatures.  He saw a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster an an eagle head and many others.  When Pedro got better, he began to mold and paint the figures as he had seen them in his dream.  Pedro Linares Lopez died on January 26, 1992 at age 86.  His family continued the tradition.
I’m not quite sure what to call my winged creature – it was a great souvenir to cherish from my trip to Huatulco.  Hope you enjoyed this little cultural insight … more on my trip to follow …
