“ Visit La Ventanilla Community Cooperative ”

When you visit Mazunte be sure to visit La Ventanilla only 2km north of MAzunte. They have a community project to protect turtle that you can witness with a daily baby turtle release. They take visitors to see the crocodiles in the lagoon. Here again you will not be disappointed. The crocs came VERY close to the boat. The cooperative has also just built several cabanas near the beach and have an excellent community run restaurant. Be sure to use cooperative run tours and restaurant as some hanger ons have open up around the beach.

My wife and I really enjoyed the 3 to 4 hour horse back ride on the beach , 35usd each. We galloped at sunset and I had not been on a horse since I was 12 years old! We also rode the horses into a croc free lagoon where the horses swam. Magical!

“ Turtle Tours ”

A very popular activity but very ILLEGAL are the swimming with turtle tours that are offered from touts on the beach. These should be avoided as marine turtles are endangered species that are making a very difficult comeback.

On the tours a person jumps in the water and grabs a marine turtle for the boat customers to play with. What people don't know is that human contact transfers diseases to the turtles and most importantly the tourists drown the turtles. Turtles often have no time to catch their breath and start to go down underwater to avoid human contact. They then stay at the bottom waiting for the boat to leave and die.

It is very illegal to touch and play with turtles. Try to respect the law and protect the very species you have come to visit. A very good alternative to Turtle tours can be found at La Ventanilla only 2 kms north of MAzunte. Here the community runs a conservation project where baby turtle hatchlings are released back to the ocean everyday in season around 5pm. You can visit also their Crocodile sancturary for only 4usd. They also offer horseback riding at sunset on their 25km long beach. Visit La Ventanilla it's a hundred times better than anything the touts offer on the beaches of MAzunte or Zipolote beaches.

Hi!

we are planning to travel around Oaxaca state and then to Yucatan by car at the end of april.

We plan to spend 2 nights - 3 days on the beach. we are chosing between Mazunte, San Agustinillo, Zipolite, Puerto Angel, Huatulco...

we would like to choose the most beautifull beach, where we can swim (cause we dont surf) and buggyboard if possible, we are not looking for the place with planty big hotels, bars and restaurant (as cancun because we will go there later) but several bars restaurants on the beach is a plus :)

Guys who have been in these places - which is your favorite? which do u like more and why?

My son and daughter-in-law swear that Mazunte is the best. They recommend Pasada Arigular (maybe not the exact spelling)

Look at Hualtulco forum page at "What's west of the airport". The beach at Zipolite is famous for its dangerous riptides. San Agustinillo and Mazunte have safer beaches. I like San Agustinillo best for the long beach (deserted at one end) and the restaurants/hotels, but S.A. and Mazunte are only 10 minutes apart by foot. They are separated by a rocky stretch so you walk the road. The hotels to investigate are Un Sueno which is rustic with no hot water and Punta Placer which is next door and quite lovely. Both are very neat places to stay, just different. Zipolite is definately worth a quick taxi ride for a day visit.

I suggest Cabanas Punta Placer as a great place to stay in St. Agustinillo. We just returned from Oaxaca and stayed at Punta Placer for about six nights and it was wonderful. Unfortunately, we did stay at Un Sueno per suggestion from a person on the travel forum but when we arrived at 9 PM from San Francisco, we were not able to go to our palapa because there was no one to show us our room. And the real downside of the place was that there was very low water pressure which meant that the toilet took forever to fill up after using it. Perhaps it was just the room we stayed in but it was surprising to have a problem with such a basic thing. We had to turn on the water with an wrench and wait until the tank filled. Then had to be there to shut the water off. The room was fine but compared to Punta Placer, my vote goes to them. There is a restaurant and very attentive people like Claire. She is an angel and she was very helpful in arranging a taxi to and from the airport. Also I recommend going to Oaxaca City to a few days. The food and charm of that city is worth the time to explore. For more details please email me. I requested a palapa on the beach.

BIRDWATCHING (SUNRISE AND SUNSET LAGOON TOURS)

For all nature lovers, especially those interested in birds, the Manialtepec lagoon is a magical place to visit. It’s surrounded by mangroves where large number of birds both residents and migratory, nest. On our tour, well see roseate spoonbills, northern jacanas, ibis, herons, parrots and parakeets, among others. You’ll also see a rich variety of vegetation on the shores of the lagoons and in its canals. Well observe the fisherman catching shrimp and lagoon fish.  At the end of the lagoon, we enter the Manialtepec river passing through beautiful aquatic flowers and plants, and we will see the connection where the lagoon the river and the ocean coverage. Either in the morning sunrise tour or the sunset lagoon tour we will be able to watch many kind of birds. Don’t forget your bathing suit and camera.
