The food is good as well. I am finally beginning to adjust to Mexican food and I have 2 favourite places to eat. These are known to me by the food they serve. At lunch we go to 'the sopes place' and in the evening 'the fish tacos place'. Both incredibly cheap eats and really good food. Bonus is that they have never made me ill! Not one parasite has managed to live inside of me after eating at these places!

Ok, its time to be honest here. I have been living in Mexico for 10 months now. I started this journal a bit late didn't I? Well, that is only because I didn't know it existed! I plan to start writing a little bit of my travels across this part of the world before I go home and then will use it for future trips as well. Bear with me people!
So, what does one do when living for one year in a small beachside town in Oaxaca state Mexico? Well, my first problem was learning how to pronounce 'Huatulco' and 'Oaxaca'. Not knowing any Spanish before landing here was a big disadvantage. Thank goodness there are good people in the world and my new Mexican friends were able to help me out there.
So, 10 months down the line with only 8 weeks left until I board a plane headed for England (well, actually its a complicated journey from here so I will board a plane headed for Houston, USA then New York and then and only then ENGLAND!) what do I have to tell you? I have to say the proximity to the beach does kind of take any surprise out of the answer. I'm just a few minutes walk from Chahue (also a bit tricky to work out how to say!) and the waves there are quite large with strong undercurrents. That means good swimming if you can swim and potential death if you can't. Fortunately I can swim. Also, volleyball every Sunday at 5pm.
The town itself is so much nicer than the rest of this coast. There is a lot of work that goes into keeping it clean and despite the fact that we have seen no precipitation of any kind for a good 6 months now the trees and public areas are watered regularly so the area still looks vaguely green. Coming from an area of the world where it rains every day this has been surprisingly easy to adjust to!
The main advantage here is the cinema. I LOVE going to the cinema. Ok, so its small and has only 4 screens which tend to black out suddenly part way through a film or the sound goes a bit funny in places. I still love it. It costs only 50 pesos (about £2.50 - bargain!) and on Wednesday there is a general 2 for 1 policy to all films. Most Wednesdays evenings are spent here.

Hopefully I will fill in the details on my travels to Guatemala, Acapulco, Tuxtla, San Cristobal and Queretaro. A story for each place I guess.

Flora Duffy and Tyler Butterfield will be looking to consolidate their places in the Olympic rankings as they head into a triathlon in Mexico this weekend.
With three races remaining, Duffy is on course to secure her ticket to the London Games this summer.
But Butterfield’s position is more precarious as he currently holds down the final spot among those who will qualify.
The world’s top 55, when all points for the season are totalled, will be eligible to compete in London and at present Duffy sits in 47th position.
“I am currently qualified for the Olympics but there are three more races which count so as long as I maintain my Olympic ranking I should be fine,” said Duffy yesterday.
“Olympic qualification points are gained through racing in World Cups and World Cup series races, and the top 55 women in the world go and I am currently number 47 on the list.
“I am racing this weekend in Huatulco, Mexico along with Tyler and after this race there are two more races that are in the Olympic qualification period.
“We both will be racing next weekend in San Diego as well.
“The following weekend is a World Cup series race in Madrid, Spain which I am not racing in but that is the last race which counts for Olympic qualification.”
Duffy competed at the last Games in Beijing in 2008 but didn’t enjoy the best of performances and will be looking to make amends this time around.
While she’s is safe for the time being, like Butterfield she’ll be hoping to perform well in Mexico after which she can concentrate on preparing for the Games.
“Once I officially find out I am going to the Olympics, which will be mid-May, my coach and I will figure out a racing and training schedule for the lead-up to the Games.
“I assume I’ll race a few more World Cups with, of course, the main focus being on performing well in London.
“I am based in Boulder because I’m a student at the University of Colorado which is in Boulder, although I did take this semester out of school to train, race and focus on the Olympics.
“Training full-time keeps me really busy and training three times a day plus getting treatment for a recurring injury I have is a full-time job.”

It is the premier cycling event in Huatulco!
Join us this Sunday, April 29th at 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with bicycles, skateboards, skates, tricycles, wheelchairs, or with the power of your own two feet!
The Streets will be closed to traffic but open for fun! (Have a look at the route on the map)
In addition, there will be several activities in Guelaguetza Park across from Marina Chahue: free salsalessons and jazz, two bicycles will be raffled (tickets are FREE, the only requirement required is to attend!).

The third round of the ITU World Cup season returns to Huatulco this year, for the final world cup event within the Olympic Qualification period. It’s the fifth year that Huatulco has hosted a World Cup event and it’s one of the toughest courses, with a technical and steep hill.
This year, both the Elite Women’s and Men’s races are highlighted by athletes chasing those valuable Olympic qualifying points and a breakthrough World Cup win. South Africa’s Gillian Sanders and Argentina’s Gonzalo Raul Tellechea will wear the respective No.1 for the first time in an ITU World Cup, while the other contenders are a mix of rising stars and veterans like Line Jensen (DEN), Flora Duffy (BER), Claudia Rivas (MEX), Pamela Oliveira (BRA), Marina Damlaimcourt (ESP), Erhard Wolfaardt (RSA), Tyler Butterfield (BER) Ryan Sissons (NZL), Bruno Pais (POR), Reinaldo Colucci (BRA), Diogo Sclebin (BRA), and Ivan Rana (ESP).

A Soft Landing
We arrived at our Xico Casita at about 10 PM last Wednesday after a 13 hour drive; 850 kilometers or 528 miles. The tolls totaled nearly $30 U.S. dollars as we snaked up from Puerto by heading directly east to Salinas Cruz, then north to Acayucan on up to just west of Veracruz City through Cardel and Xalapa landing softly in Xico.
We did not even try for an Internet connection until Monday morning as Thursday through Sunday were spent cleaning and doing yard work – always the first order of business after being away 6 months. We did call a couple days ahead to have someone clear a path so we could get to the Casita without trudging through knee deep vegetation.
The trip was pretty much standard – no mordida, no road blocks or banditos were encountered.
We were stopped three times at military checkpoints: one was a wave through; the next required lifting the trunk lid and quick look see; the third was a fairly extensive inspection going through boxes, luggage and such. At each stop we were not asked to produce any papers. Questions about where we had come from and where we were going – the usual.
We did notice a change in the driving process. Apparently the left turn signal has yet another purpose. Of course the universal notice of making a left turn is here. Additionally here in Mexico one might turn on their left blinker to indicate that it is safe to pass – this is mostly used by commercial vehicles, large trucks etc. New is the left blinker appears to be used to notify a slower vehicle in the right lane that they are in the process of being passed on the left.
We saw this last explanation used quite a bit – never before. Since we have been hiding out in Puerto Escondido for six months sans any television, perhaps we missed the news bulletin about this new driving technique? Anyone?
Yesterday we began the task of getting connected to the Internet – but we came with new tools this time, and hopes of reuniting with friends down the road that shared their connection and costs with us whence last here. The offer remained.
We immediately set up a wifi unit, connected it to their Telmex Internet modem and set up an antenna at our casa where we get a small signal and a slow Internet connection. Running out of day light and energy we retired early from all the wires and settings to read email and see what was going on in the world according to several news sources.
Romney is apparently the candidate of choice by the Republican Party and Obama continues to flail away at a poor attempt at being the President of the United States (nothing new there).
Also noted in other political races that the PRI’s presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto is poised to be victorious in Mexico come July. It should be noted he has held this position of favorite for more than two years.
Moving on to things that actually matter we are readying conditions for the arrival of Anita’s brother and his lady come mid-May. We reunited with several friends here in the Hood drinking a bit too much tequila in the process.
Today we were able to connect to the Internet with radios that provide very positive connections from distances as far as 10 kilometers (six miles). All is working and well – more on this soon.
Feeling better today, we also did some dress up work (read gardening) on the vine wall at the top of our property along our street as May 3rd is the celebration of the Capilla (also just at the top of our property). Last night a few of the locals were sprucing up the little Capilla with some new paint and roof repairs. We covered this extensively in 2008 here
You folks north of the Rio Bravo might be surprised to know May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) is not a highly celebrated event in Mexico – nothing like the partying in the U.S. But here locally May 3rd is a real party for our Capilla.
