A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

“Beautiful hotel, but wi-fi didn't work”
4 of 5 starsReviewed January 19, 2012 NEW
I know....why do you need wi-fi in a relaxed place like Puerto Escondido? Well, we are addicted to our e-mails and news at home and Facebook. So we were quite unhappy when the signal either couldn't be found by our computers or wasn't strong enough to get to the third floor. We tried connecting at the restaurant, also without success, though did see people connected there the following day. The signal never worked in four full days in our room.

Otherwise, the hotel is very beautiful. It is on somewhat of a hill, so it has very nice views of the sea, one beach, and possibly the sunset, though not in January...the sun sets too far north.
Though it is not a new hotel, it has been very well taken care of. The suite that we stayed in on the top floor was in excellent condition, and very spacious. Given all the space, I have to say that it could have been better furnished to be better utilized...for example a workdesk, and more comfortable chairs. Also, there was not a three-prong plug, and my friend had a laptop that needed an adapter to connect....in vain, after we found that there was no wi-fi.

The pool area seems nice enough, though we didn't use it much, preferring the beach. My friend took a short swim one evening without comment.

The front desk people were quite friendly and helpful regarding directions.

The service in the restaurant at breakfast was quite slow, even when not busy. I had my companion order an unwanted coffee so that I would have a second cup ready when I finished mine.

All in all, though the hotel and room were clean and spacious, and the location good, I would probably try another place next time.

5 Reasons to Go to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

5 Reasons to Go to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Why should you be making arrangements for Oaxaca accommodation and picking Puerto Escondido in Mexico as your next holiday destination? Here are 5 reasons that make the choice easy.
1) It boasts abundant natural beauty. Awe-inspiring sunsets, inviting waters, and rich marine life will easily charm any world-weary visitor. Re-ignite your love for our planet by going on boat tours and scuba diving to see fascinating and colorful aquatic creatures. Even just lounging by the window of your Puerto Escondido accommodation will give you stunning views of the surrounding vistas, which are blessedly free from distracting high-rise buildings.
2) It’s the best place to ride some waves. Zicatela Beach is every surfer’s dream destination, known for its legendary waves. Those who are just starting to learn the sport, however, can still do so by opting for less intimidating waters at Playa Marineros and Carrizalillo. Whether you’re an expert or a beginner, surfing in Puerto Escondido will definitely make your must-visit list.
3) You get a taste of true Mexican culture. While other places in the country are of course just as distinct in their Mexican ways, Puerto Escondido has a history and culture of its own. A lot of the traditions are still retained and can be seen today, from the architecture of its buildings to the irresistible cuisine. Even the local tourists hail it as a favorite place to enjoy a vacation.
4) There is sense of balance everywhere. You get the best of both worlds here. The city is both rustic and contemporary, while the beaches satisfy the need for a tropical hideaway without you having to set yourself too far from civilization. There’s a charming mix of the old and the new, the soothing and the frenetic at Puerto Escondido that makes it appealing to all types of travelers.
5) It reignites your sense of adventure. Aside from the rich aquatic life that its green waters offers, the land also lends itself to various means of exploration quite easily. Enjoy the great outdoors by going hiking, biking, kayaking, or camping to discover lush jungles, indigenous mountain villages, and impressive flora and fauna. Not only will you get to appreciate the world’s wonders, you’ll be getting some much needed exercise while you’re at it, too. With so many things to see and do, you would think twice about staying all cooped up in your Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca accommodation.
