A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Has anybody been to the Posada Real recently? How close is it to town? Is there an area of the ocean that is calm enough for swimming? Any snorkeling nearby?

I've never stayed there, but have been to the grounds and the beach club. You are about 5-10 minutes away from the Rinconada, a small retail strip with restaurants. It's a bit of a hike (maybe 20 min) into "uptown" where the mercado is. I stay nearby and walk it every day, but I like to walk. Taxis are cheap if you don't.. The Zicatela area (the surfer beach) is where a lot of restaurants and bars are, and you would need a taxi. Same with the Adoquin, the tourist street. Your closest beach for swimming is Carrizalillo (10 min) which also sometimes is okay for snorkeling. Manzanillo is just a little farther and it is also sometimes okay for snorkeling.

Thanks for the info! We like to explore the areas we visit, and this sounds absolutely perfect. Another question - we also like to take 1-2 deep sea fishing trips each trip, and wondered if you know of any local fishermen who we could contact. If Trip Advisor doesn't allow you to post any names, I'll give you our email address.

You can get a lot of info on Fishing guides while you are there, we used a guy who frequents the beach at Carazillilo, his name is Chon (pronounced Shawn) and he was fantastic. Others will give you a name of a very prominent family from PE, I can't remember his name but he is also supposed to be great.

Matt Payette and his wife Betty-Anne had never heard of Puerto Escondido. But for the Calgary couple seeking a sun-soaked retreat, that element of obscurity worked just fine.

The Payettes purchased a three-bedroom penthouse condo through Vivo Resorts last year and are looking forward to the experience of their tucked-away piece of paradise.

“The fact that it was ‘out of the way’ was very appealing to us,” Matt says. “We aren’t big fans of the hustle and bustle like you might find in more developed areas.”

Vivo Resorts is a 150-unit development in southern Mexico by Calgarian and former Olympic skier Cary Mullen. The units are set to be spread across nine buildings that stretch along 1,300 feet of beach.

Vivo Resorts is one of the developments that will participate in the Calgary Herald Recreational and Investment Properties Show next Friday through Sunday at the BMO Centre in Stampede Park.

The first building at Vivo is expected to be ready for occupancy in February.

Phase 2 sales at the development opened in December of 2010 and have gone very well, says Chuck Ashton, sales and marketing manager for Vivo Resorts.

Many of the purchases have come from Canada, specifically Calgary and Edmonton.

“I’d say 85 per cent,” Ashton says of the Canadian content among owners at Vivo. “We are a Canadian company, and attracting Canadian buyers, with a really heavy slant toward western Canada.”

The development is taking shape with a slate of recreational activities, complete with a clubhouse, spa, soccer field, and tennis courts — not to mention the opportunity to make good use of the water.

“I think fishing is going to be fun, whether it’s via a charter or from shore,” Matt says.

“We saw a young local boy with some line on a simple spool. He was throwing out his line from the beach. Not sure what type of fish he caught but it looked to be about 10 pounds.”

Matt adds that swimming and boogie-boarding are also possibilities.

“Of course there is also the sea life in the area,” Matt says. “You can do the tours to see turtles, dolphins…. On this trip, from shore we’ve seen whales, dolphins and flying manta rays.”

Average buyers at Vivo Resorts have been in their mid-50s, five to seven years from retirement, Ashton says.

While the Payettes continue to work, they plan on making the trip to Mexico once or twice a year.

“When I retire, we plan on being snowbirds and coming down during the winter months,” Matt adds.

Units are available as a one-bedroom studio or in two-, three- or four-bedroom layouts. The rooms are decked out in one of two base finishing styles: Nuevo Mexicano or Beach Contemporary.

Buyers at Vivo Resorts have the opportunity to rent out their properties when they aren’t using them. The rental program is completely marketed and co-ordinated by Vivo Resorts.

“We take care of everything, from check-in to check-out,” Ashton said. “It’s a very hands-off experience for the owner.”
