A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

“Do you know what a reservation means?”
2 of 5 starsReviewed 12 November 2011
I didn't get to actually stay here as the reservation I'd made was not honoured. It felt like a Seinfeld episode - when I got there, while they had my reservation (which had been made over the phone with the owner himself), they did not have an actual room for me!
Place seemed a little grotty and run down to me anyway, so was not that fussed to go find an alternate place, esp as no money had been put down.

Theses cabanas have a stunning view and easy access to the beautiful beaches of Mazunte, Mexico. The grounds are clean and well kept and as a woman traveling alone, one always feels safe. Emiliano, who owns and runs Balamjuyuc is the "Mayor" of Mazunte and is always there to give good advise of things to do or help one as needed. So if you need a break from life head there to chill and relax!

I had already heard about this pleasant and peaceful accomodation but what we found exceeded all our expectations. My wife, daughter and son as well as our guest family -both families traveled by car all the way from the State of Guanajuato, Central Mexico- had nothing but an unforgettable time!

Emiliano, who´s the charming Manager in this paradise, seems to be like an old-known-friend who has all the experience and capabilities to deliver a dream in a life time.

Balamjuyuc definitely has the best landscape and overview of the ocean in town, and this beautiful sightseeing has no match within the next 60 miles.

We have nothing but a HUGE ´thank you´ to the awesome crew at Balamjuyuc.

“Heaven on Earth”
5 of 5 starsReviewed 24 February 2011
Balamjuyuc is a magical place located on the bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The grounds are well-organized with pathways winding through the natural landscape. On special evenings, Sweat lodge ceremonies are offered including a delicious meal afterwards. The massages are wonderful in the open air with the ocean sounds as the music. Emiliano does a wonderful oil massage integrating shiatsu, swedish and lomi-lomi techniques. I felt nurtured and totally relaxed and "ironed-out" after the experience. His work on the neck, shoulders, hands and feet I recall being especially delicious! I would recommend staying here, going to a Sweat lodge ( Temazcal) and getting a massage to complete your Mazunte experience.

I stayed in Balamjuyuc for a month recently and had one of the nicest experiences ever. The owner is very welcoming and makes you feel right at home, it's a cute little oasis for relaxing, meeting great people and connecting with yourself.
Apart from that they offer great massages and also a Temazcal once in a while which is a traditional Mayan sweat lodge, which has been my favorite one so far with herbal infused steam and chanting, a truly cleansing spiritual experience!
I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a unique and intentional experience.
