A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

About this listing

We are located on the east end of Zipolite Beach in a natural, relaxed atmosphere. Due to increased demand, for an added cost we now offer a "portable kitchen" (frigobar refrigerator and/or electric burner) for guests who wish to cook. Please inquire in booking request.

Description
The space
We are located on the less populated end of Zipolite beach, allowing our guests to enjoy the natural environment to the max! Cafe Maya is the local Lifeguard Base, and my partner Rey is the Lifeguard captain. He gives surf classes, rents surf equipment and kayaks when ocean conditions permit. In the Cafe, our more than 16 years' experience offering sushi and whole grain breads and natural baked goods make us leaders in the region. Guests can also sample other Asian Mexican fusion fare delights, traditional Mexican cuisine, vegetarian dishes and fresh local seafood!
Guest access
Guests may access the Cafe, wash area (for a small added fee for soap, water, power, etc.), shared kitchen (negotiable in cost of rent), and coming soon in February, our 3rd floor deck with hammocks, yoga area and a gorgeous view!
Interaction with guests
We live here, so we are available 24/7 to assist our guests. For the moment, due to this fact I do not have safes in the rooms, as our presence guarantees the safety of our property. However, I do have an office where guests may store valuables if they prefer.
The neighborhood
We are near the soccer field, health clinic, private doctor's office, local chapel, basketball courts, local schools, town hall, mom and pop stores, Playa del Amor, and this side of the beach is less populated and a more natural and relaxed environment. An ATM machine is located a 10 minute walk from Café Maya.
Getting around
Collectivo taxis pass by one block behind the house. Cost is around $10 and $20 pesos to neighboring beaches and communities.
