Hola my Mexico-loving friends! It has been a difficult month for Mexico and its people, as the leader  of one of the country's largest cartels was killed by the government in  an early morning attack. As news spread that morning, reactions across the state of Jalisco,  in particular, were extreme. Cars and buses were set on fire in Puerto  Vallarta, tourists were told to stay at their hotels, families were told to  stay at home, and stores and restaurants were closed to the public for  several days. It was a tense week around the country following El Mencho's death,  with many flights being cancelled and others choosing to move their  trips to later in the year. I have done my best to collect up-to-date information on safety  around the country this month. Please ensure that when you are making  decisions about whether or not to proceed with your trips to Mexico  in the coming months, you are not solely relying on social media or  a single news source. And if you do choose to head here, particularly  to some of the areas that were most affected at the time, like Jalisco,  remember that many people are living this without the choice to stay or go. Mexico Updates from Around the Web ​It has already been reported that so much misinformation  floated around in the first day or two after the death of El Mencho.  This is why it is so important to get your news from verifiable sources. If you haven't read up on all that happened or you don't know  what I'm talking about, CNN has a full rundown of all that happened  on and after February 22nd when the death occurred. ​This Al Jazeera article breaks down who El Mencho was, why  this has caused so much violence, and which states were most  affected. This is a helpful article if you are concerned about the  location of your upcoming trip. Alex Wittman made  a heartfelt video about what she knows is happening in Guadalajara right now.  She will be offering more updates in the coming weeks,  so follow her channel if you want to know more about the  goings on in Guadalajara. With all of this happening so close to the World Cup,  FIFA is coming to Mexico to assess the safety for the  upcoming games. They have assured President Sheinbaum  that they feel confident the games will go ahead there. The US Embassy in Mexico released a statement on March 2nd  about visiting Mexico during spring break. They have stated  that the danger following the death of El Mencho is all but  gone, but to take the same regular precautions that you  would when visiting Mexico any other time. On a positive note,  Mexico held its most recent Supreme Court session outside of Mexico City  for the first time. In an effort to bring decision-making across the  country, the Supreme Court has a session in Chiapas. This is all  part of the continued justice system reform, following last year's  first election of the Supreme Court Justices. Visiting Mexico Soon?
