Shutdown Disrupts Skies

The Federal Aviation Administration is reducing flight capacity by 10% at 40 major airports beginning today. The cuts were prompted by staffing shortages, as air traffic controllers and TSA agents approach six weeks unpaid amid the government shutdown, now the longest ever.

The reductions could affect over 268,000 passengers on roughly 1,800 domestic flights daily and will continue until safety data improves. Controllers, who have missed one paycheck since the shutdown began Oct. 1 and are set to miss another next week, have increasingly been calling off work. Most were already working mandatory six-day workweeks due to chronic staffing shortages. Over 6,200 flights were delayed and 500 were canceled last Friday, marking the single worst day for delays since the shutdown began. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffey attributed roughly 65% of those delays to controller staffing, compared to the usual 5%.

Travelers began receiving cancellation notices yesterday, and several airlines have temporarily eased refund policies. See list of affected airports here.

Hola my Mexico-loving friends!

I can't quite believe it's already November! I hope those of you who headed to Mexico to experience Dia de Muertos had a wonderful trip.

We are just about at the other end of hurricane season after some devastating flooding in the central and eastern parts of the country in October.

Late-November and early December is my favorite time of year in the central region. It's a beautiful time to visit Mexico City, Querétaro, Puebla, and Michoacán.

Puerto Vallarta is about to be packed to the brim with beachgoers (be sure to check out my favorite lesser-visited beaches here)

Mexico Updates from Around the Web

Mexico has seen some of the largest rainfall in history this year, and October brought flash flooding and landslides across the country after three storms arrived at roughly the same time. Read more about what cities were affected here.
Cruise season is in full flow in Mexico's Pacific coast as Mazatlan prepares for 18 ships to dock in November and a further 21 to dock in December. If you are planning a trip to Mazatlan this month, it's worth noting that the busiest days (with 3 or more ships in port) will be November 12th and 26th. Read more here.
As for Puerto Vallarta, they are expecting a whopping 22 cruise ships to stop in port in November. November 11th and November 25th will see three ships in port at the same time. Read more about it here.
As El Tecolote Beach in La Paz continues to grow in popularity, problems with traffic congestion, parking, and theft have grown. The city is putting together a plan to make this season's beach-going safer and more enjoyable. Read about it here.
If you are a Caribbean beach lover, you'll be happy to hear that the Sargassum season is almost over. This dense seaweed, which takes up much of the space on beaches from Cancun to Tulum during the summer months, is washing up in smaller amounts this month. The government has removed over 87,000 tons of Sargassum since January of this year. Read more about it here.
Lima has cut off diplomatic ties with Mexico after Mexico granted asylum to ex-Peruvian Prime Minister, Betssy Chávez, who is currently facing charges for a 2022 coup attempt.
The whales have arrived over a month early in Los Cabos, so if you are headed here this November, you might just luck out and get a chance to see these migrating beauties from shore. Please note that you cannot legally get up close to them until the season starts on December 15th, so do not be swayed by those who may be skirting the rules.

Seeing the whales from shore in Los Cabos and Todos Santos is one of the most magical things I've ever witnessed.
